Wisconsin Society for Ornithology

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Wisconsin Society for Ornithology (WSO), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of Wisconsin birdlife, is the only statewide birding organization in the state of Wisconsin. Founded in 1939 to "promote the study of birds in Wisconsin",[1] the WSO is a volunteer organization, run by a Board of Directors. The organization provides education, field trips, advocacy, financial support, and expertise to the birding community in Wisconsin.

The WSO publishes a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal, The Passenger Pigeon. It published the first Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas in 2006, edited by Noel Cutright, Bettie Harriman, and Robert Howe (ISBN 978-0977498604 Search this book on .), and it co-sponsored the second Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas, which was completed in 2019.[2] It was the first state to conduct a breeding bird atlas using the EBird portal of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.[3]

The WSO establishes the official records for bird sightings in the state of Wisconsin by developing documentation standards and a formal process to evaluate rare bird records. It is the official source for the checklist for Wisconsin Birds.[4]
