"Wonder If U Care" (stylized in lowercase) is the debut single by American shoegaze musician Flyingfish. It was self-released on April 28, 2023.[3] It is the opening track and only single from his debut EP, Isolation, self-released on May 2.[4]
Background and composition[edit]
"Wonder If U Care" is an instrumental shoegaze song.[1] It is the first song Flyingfish released onto major streaming platforms, at 15 years old. He created the song entirely on FL Studio, using MIDI guitars and drums rather than physical instruments.[1] Prior to the song's release, Flyingfish posted several snippets of it to his TikTok page, in the form of promotional slideshows with the song playing in the background. These videos garnered thousands of views and built an unexpectedly large amount of anticipation for the song's release, and, as stated by Abby Kenna of Ones to Watch, "quickly hook[ed] the indie community on the ambient rage of the guitar instrumental".[5] He posted the song to SoundCloud shortly after seeing its popularity on TikTok, and after continued success on SoundCloud, bought a DistroKid subscription allowing him to release the song on major streaming platforms.[6] Following its release, "Wonder if U Care" continued to go viral online, and was added to numerous Spotify editorial playlists such as Shoegaze Now, Lorem, All New Indie, and IRL Angel.[5] As of January 2024, it has amassed over 15 million streams on Spotify and over 207,000 TikTok videos. It peaked at number 25 on Billboard's TikTok Top 50 chart.

Eli Enis of Stereogum called the song's Internet virality "jaw-dropping to observe". He cited its popularity, as well as that of songs like "Your Face” by Wisp and "Life Imitates Life" by Quannnic, as driving forces behind the resurgence of shoegaze music in 2023, which he felt was "producing some of the most inventive music in the genre’s history".[1] Abby Kenna of Ones to Watch described Flyingfish as a “15-year-old phenomenon, taking the internet by storm with his modern shoegaze creations”.[5]
