Words + Pictures is a production studio founded by Connor Schell and Chernin Entertainment in 2021.[1] Words + Pictures is led by the creative team behind the sports documentary series "30 for 30”, for which it continues to produce episodes.[2][3][4]

Recent Words + Pictures projects include Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space, a 2022 documentary that follows the first all-civilian mission to space; Jeen-Yus: A Kanye Trilogy', a three-part docuseries that charts Kanye West’s career; and Super League: The War for Football, a four-part documentary series about the controversial plan for a breakaway European football league.

Words + Pictures has distributed its media across platforms like ESPN,[5] ESPN+,[6] Apple TV+,[7] and Netflix.[8]

In 2021, Words + Pictures launched Full Day to focus on live entertainment, specials, and unscripted series.[9]

In 2022, it was announced that Peter Chernin would launch the North Road Company, a global content studio that would bring together Chernin Entertainment, the U.S. assets of Red Arrow Studios (which includes Love Is Blind producer Kinetic Content) and Words + Pictures.[10][11]

Words + Pictures is based in New York.

Background

Connor Schell founded Words + Pictures in 2020 after departing ESPN, where he worked for 16 years and was the Executive Vice President of Content.[12] During his time at ESPN, he created the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning “30 for 30” documentary series in partnership with Bill Simmons.[13]

In 2022, it was announced that Libby Geist, then VP and Executive Producer of ESPN Films and Original Content would be departing ESPN to join Schell at Words + Pictures.[14] Geist and Schell had previously collaborated at ESPN to executive produce several nonfiction projects such as The Last Dance, the “30 for 30” series, and the documentary O.J.: Made in America.[15]

Sports writer Aaron Cohen[16] joined Words + Pictures shortly after Geist as Head of Development.[17]

Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space': Directed by Jason Hehir, Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space follows Inspiration4, the SpaceX Dragon mission that launched four civilians into space. The film was produced by TIME Studios in association with Words + Pictures, with Schell, Geist, and Aaron Cohen serving as executive producers.

Jeen-Yus: A Kanye Trilogy: Directed by Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, Jeen-Yus: A Kanye Trilogy is a three-part docuseries filmed over two decades that charts rapper Kanye West’s career. The series was produced with creative control in partnership with TIME Studios, with Schell as executive producer.

Super League: The War for Football: Directed by Jeffrey Zimbalist, Super League: The War for Football is a four-part series that documents the controversial plan for a breakaway league in European football.

The King of Collectibles: The King of Collectibles follows Ken Goldin and his team as they manage an auction house specializing in unique collectibles. The series will premiere on Netflix in April 2023.

Algiers, America: The Relentless Pursuit: Directed by Jackson Fager, this five-part documentary tells the story of a high school football program in a community struggling with gun violence. This series will be available on Hulu in April 2023.

30 for 30

Shark: Directed by Jason Hehir and Thomas Odelfelt, Shark traces how Greg Norman's career was shaped by one day at the Masters in 1996.[18]

Jeanette Lee Vs.: Directed by Ursula Liang and produced by Cora Atkinson (Summer of Soul), Jeanette Lee Vs. chronicles the story of The Black Widow, one of the most infamous billiards player of all time.[19]

American Son: Directed by Jay Caspian Kang, American Son tells the story of Michael Chang as a young American tennis star with Taiwanese immigrant parents. The story is centered around his upset of the top-ranked player Ivan Lendl at the 1989 French Open when he was only 17, which occurred around the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre in China.[20]

In production

The Yankees Win: In February 2023 it was announced that Words + Pictures, Hock Films, Bad Robot and Zipper Bros Films are partnering with Major League Baseball to produce an eight-part documentary about the New York Yankees.[21]

Full Day

Full Day was created in 2021 by Connor Schell and Chernin Entertainment and is led by executive producer Dave Chamberlin. Full Day produces the Oscars Red Carpet Show, NFL Honors, the ESPYS, and the Savage X Fenty shows.[22]

Hock Films

In 2022 Words + Pictures acquired production company Hock Films, founded by director and producer Jonathan Hock.[23]
