Background[edit]
The album was first teased to fans in December of 2020 with an Instagram story of John Anthony in a recording studio. Three months later, John Anthony released the album's first single "That Boy Different" on March 5, 2021. The song received an NFL highlight remix music video upon it's release, similar to John Anthony's 2020 hit song "Ballin" and it's NBA highlight remix music video.
John Anthony would then announce the release of the album and its deluxe version after several teaser videos. The album featured production from many producers including Gustavs Strazdins, Malik Salim, Paven Melody and many others. The album art can be characterized as a photo of John Anthony standing in front of his own lyrics, written on several pieces of scrap paper and pinned to a wall. The artwork showcased how much lyrics were written for the making of this album.
Critical reception[edit]
Words Are Weapons received both positive and negative reviews. Several music reviewers slated many of John Anthony's songs on the album to be heavily similar to Eminem's music style. Upon those critical reviews, the album lacked to attract much praise at first. The numbers, however, were reaching an all-time high for John Anthony. The album gained over 10,000 worldwide streams in its first two weeks, and would later received a commemorative gold record for its accomplishment. Songs on the album such as "Bodied", which is a heavy-hitting aggression track, was criticized by many for having almost an identical style to that of Eminem’s 2002 massive hit single "'Till I Collapse”. According to reviews on K-100 Radio Station in Atlanta, the song received major disfavor and criticism due to the comparisons following its air, resulting in the song being taken down from its daily rotation.
Apart from the comparisons, the album also faced some backlash towards a few songs, such as "Seduce" and "Going Too Far", for indulging in disturbing fantasies and stating provocatively biased and offensive opinions. Originally, the deluxe version featured an extra 7 songs, a total of 24 tracks, upon its release. A now unreleased songs on the deluxe version entitled "Need Ya" ended up being removed from streaming services weeks after its release as a result of derogatory content. The song today is no longer available on any streaming or distributional platforms, however, the song is still apart of the albums physical copy release. Many who have heard the song stated it to be hostile and disturbingly offensive. Critics have also objected to the use of the word "faggot", which is stated in several of John Anthony's songs throughout the album.
After a couple months, the album did receive some critical acclaim from music critics.
Lyrics[edit]
Throughout the album, many of John Anthony's lyrics are criticized towards musicians, personal acquaintances and the music industry. John Anthony has several songs where he has verbal attacked his ex-girlfriends. On the album, songs such as "There She Goes", interestingly enough, caught on too many as it also shows John Anthony diss several of his former relationships. The song has been played on several radios stations throughout Atlanta and New York and even reached out of state in Russia. One of the more unhinging disses that he lashes out on is the song "Toxic", which shows John Anthony oppressively criticize and verbally deprecate his former girlfriend’s mother, calling her “trailer trash” and stating in the song:
“You’re the clear definition of trailer trash with your ripped up tee’s and, pants / but at least I know where the fuck your daughter got all her gene’s from”
Anthony also takes shots at the music industry in the song "Words Are Weapons", where he name drops and attacks many of todays biggest rappers. He continues to state how people compare him to Eminem, but many rappers today are biting other rappers style. NF, Young Thug, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, and Lil Pump are just some of the names that John Anthony calls out in the song. He also states in the song his unpleasantness for today's hip-hop and the music industry as a whole, believing the industry doesn't know how to find real talent. He later in the song states many artists who represent hip-hop today. Joyner Lucas, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar are a few to name.
