World Art Nouveau Day

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

World Art Nouveau Day is an event dedicated to Art Nouveau that is celebrated annually on the 10th of June. The Museum of Applied Arts (Budapest) (IMM) organized the first World Art Nouveau Day in 2013, in coöperation with Szecessziós Magazin[1] (a Hungarian Magazine about Art Nouveau). The selected date - June 10th - is the anniversary of the death of both Antoni Gaudí and Ödön Lechner – two architects of the movement, from different corners of Europe. Activities like those organised on World Art Nouveau Day aim to create more awareness of Art Nouveau heritage among the public.

History of World Art Nouveau Day[edit]

The original idea came from someone working for the Szecessziós Magazine[2]. After a journey of several months to Denmark, he came back with photos of the Danish Art Nouveau, and with the idea to create a World Art Nouveau Day.

Most events organized in relation to that 1st World Art Nouveau Day took place during the weekend before this date, on the 8-9th of June 2013. The first World Art Nouveau Day was organized in coöperation with the Partage Plus project[3], which is a European project aimed at digitizing Art Nouveau objects for Europeana. The Partage Plus[4] project started in March 2012. 25 partner institutions agreed to digitize 75,000 items within 24 months. The works selected included European Art Nouveau objects (some in 3D), posters and even complete buildings. The project was executed to make all of the items available for access through Europeana.

Since that first event in 2013, World Art Nouveau Day has been coördinated by both the Réseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN)[5] from Brussels, as well as the Art Nouveau European Route[6] from Barcelona.

Organisations promoting World Art Nouveau Day[edit]

The two biggest organisations in Europe coördinating the World Art Nouveau Day activities are the Réseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN) in Brussels, and the Art Nouveau European Route in Barcelona.

The Réseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN) is a European network of organisations from all over European with a rich Art Nouveau heritage.[7] It is a common initiative co-financed by the European Commission. The RANN aims “to establish active co-operation and an exchange of experiences among the many European participants actively involved in the study, protection and extensive promotion and dissemination of the European and international “Art Nouveau” heritage. It also aims to stimulate the interest of the public and authorities responsible for preservation with regard to this heritage, certain aspects of which remain unrecognized or at risk.” (according to Article 5, paragraph 1 of their own statutes[8])

Member cities of the RANN are Ålesund (Norway), Aveiro (Portugal), Bad Nauheim (Germany), Barcelona (Spain), Brussels (Belgium), Budapest (Hungary), Darmstadt (Germany), Glasgow (United Kingdom), La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), Havana (Cuba), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Melilla (Spain), Nancy (France), Oradea (Romania), Regione Lombardia(Italy), Rīga (Latvia), Subotica (Serbia), Szeged (Hungary), Terrassa (Spain) and Vienna (Austria). In most of these cities activities are organised for World Art Nouveau Day every year, which is encouraged by the RANN.

More organisations join the European Route and the RANN every year. Since a few years individual members are welcomed too.

The future of World Art Nouveau Day[edit]

The centenary of the deaths of Art Nouveau patron Eusebi Güell and Art Nouveau painter Lluïsa Vidal from Catalonia will be celebrated in 2018. For Güell’s centenary, all the sites with the name “Güell” (Palau Güell, Park Güell, Güell Pavilions, Colònia Güell, etc.) are cooperating in events, among which a cycle of concerts in all these venues. The celebrations for Lluïsa Vidal already began with a major retrospective exhibition[9] at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). The Barcelona Modernisme Route[10] is coördinating a series of events like conferences, concerts, children’s activities, etc. for the occasion.

Other members of the RANN and the Art Nouveau European Route are organising city walks, guided tours at museums, conferences, workshops, etc. Publications about all organised activities can be found on all respective websites and Facebook pages, as well as on a Facebook page that is entirely dedicated to World Art Nouveau Day[11]

In 2018, Dutch museums and other organisations will participate in the activities for the first time.
