Description
World Bindi Day is a modern Hindu holiday that celebrates Hindu culture across the globe. World Bindi Day is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu festival of Navratri. On World Bindi Day, all Hindus are encouraged to wear the bindi proudly. They are also encouraged to post photos of themselves wearing their bindi with the hashtags #WorldBindiDay, #Bindi, #BindiPride [1], and #missionbindi [2] so as to raise awareness of the holiday.
History
World Bindi Day was launched on October 17, 2020 by Archita Nemalikanti, the founder of Mission Bindi [3] [2]. In 2021, World Bindi Day was celebrated on October 7 [4]. In 2022, World Bindi Day will be celebrated on September 26 [1].
Significance
According to Archita Nemalikanti, Hinduism is slowly eroding away on a global scale. In order to combat this, Archita Nemalikanti launched Mission Bindi in hopes that it would inspire all Hindus to wear their religious forehead marking proudly. She believes that by bringing awareness to the bindi, and all that it signifies, Hindus around the world will reconnect with their faith [2].
Support
Activist Shefali Vaidya gave her thoughts on the significance of the World Bindi Day initiative during her keynote speech at the first inaugural celebrations declaring, "The bindi is not a dot but a 5,000 year old civilizational thought!” [3]. She went on to explain how the bindi is the primary steadfast symbol of Hindus across all sects and, as such, there is nothing better to express proudly one's Hinduness than through the bindi.
The inaugural event was also supported by the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) and the Hindu Students Council (HSC). Arnav Kejruwal, president of HSC, showed his support of the initiative by explaining how HSC loves to see such innovation and rigor coming from young Hindus. Sohini Sircar, a CoHNA board member, chimed in to state that celebrating the bindi is a perfect way to show appreciation for Hindu culture and promote more awareness of Hinduism [3].
Social Influence
World Bindi Day has garnered support on several platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Currently on Instagram, #bindi shows 568k posts, #WorldBindiDay shows 500+ posts, and #bindi, #bindipride, and #missionbindi all show 100+ posts. Several social media accounts relating to the holiday have been created such as: @worldbindiday on Facebook, @missionbindi on Instagram, @worldbindiday on Instagram, and @worldbindiday on Twitter. Additionally, Advait Music on Youtube has released an official music video and song for World Bindi Day [5].
