The World Boxing Council MuayThai (WBC MuayThai) is a non-profit organization established in 2004 as a subsidiary of the World Boxing Council.[1] It is responsible for sanctioning professional Muay Thai bouts, maintaining fighter rankings, and awarding world titles in the sport.

History

On 26 November 2001 the king of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej held discussions with World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman and Police General Kovid Bhakdibhumi about Muay Thai.[1][2] Following this meeting led by Kovid Bhakdibhum the WBC eventually established its Muay Thai division.[2][3][4]

On 10 February 2023 the leadership of WBC Muay Thai was transfered to Thanapol Bhakdibhumi the son of Kovid Bhakdibhum.[5]

First world title

The inaugural WBC Muay Thai Super‑Welterweight world title was contested on December 10, 2005, when Thai legend Yodsanklai Fairtex defeated Australia’s John Wayne Parr in Queensland, Australia[6][7][8]. This marked the first-ever world championship awarded by WBC MuayThai. On the same night Nathan Corbett defeated Magnum Sakai to become the first WBC Cruiserweight Champion.[7][8]
