World Memon Day
World Memon Day is celebrated on 10 April every year by the global Memon community. The day aims to recognize the community’s culture and its efforts to help others.
Founding
World Memon Day was first observed on 11 April 2017, initiated by over 300 Memon Jamaats and institutions across India and 15 countries. It featured charitable activities for the benefit of humanity, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion.[1] By 2018, more than 400 Jamaats and institutions within India and 20 countries had joined the celebration.
The observance was formally adopted by the World Memon Organization (WMO) during its 21st Annual General Meeting in November 2023, when the official date was fixed as 10 April annually.[2][3] The initiative received strong backing from Iqbal Memon Officer, President of the All India Memon Jamat Federation, who coordinated with international Memon leaders to formalize its observance.[4]
Celebrations
Events marking World Memon Day are held in countries with significant Memon populations, such as India, Pakistan, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. These include large-scale charitable programs such as medical camps, blood donation drives, food distribution, school kit donations, and interfaith harmony gatherings.[5][6]
On 8 April 2025, Iqbal Memon Officer, President of the All India Memon Jamat Federation (AIMJF), led a delegation to meet the Governor of Maharashtra in Mumbai. The group highlighted the aims of World Memon Day—promoting charity, unity, and public service.[7]
In May 2024, Officer met with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. During the meeting, he called for communal harmony and strongly opposed the proposed renaming of Ahmadnagar, demonstrating broader civic engagement beyond cultural events.[8]
Notability
Despite being founded by community groups, World Memon Day has received in-depth coverage in independent outlets PhotoNews, Headline PK, Pakistan Observer, Free Press Journal, and Times of India.
