World Mental Health Coalition
The World Mental Health Coalition (WMHC) is a 501(c)(3) professional organization headed by Bandy X. Lee, a forensic psychiatrist at Yale School of Medicine, who has since 2017 led a movement of mental health professionals [1] to bring attention to the dangers of mental unfitness in the U.S. presidency. Initially named the National Coalition, its formation shortly followed the publication of the instant New York Times bestseller, The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, a compilation of essays by 37 psychiatrists and mental health experts who warned against the public health dangers of having a mentally unfit president. According to its mission statement, it is dedicated to strengthening the fabric of society through education and the sharing of expertise for the betterment of collective mental health.[2] Its members: 1. provide consultation to government bodies upon request; 2. organize public forums for discussion and education; and 3. alert, protect, and educate the public when we see signs of imminent or lasting danger within the body politic or in its leaders.[2]
The nonpartisan organization, consisting of thousands of licensed mental health professionals from around the world, formed partly to oppose the American Psychiatric Association's stance since the presidency of Donald Trump. It claims that the Association not only failed to meet the psychiatric profession’s societal responsibility but inhibited individual professionals from doing so.[2] Its founding vice president was an officer of the American Psychiatric Association who resigned because of its complicity with the Trump administration[3]. The World Mental Health Coalition held a conference with 13 experts in several different fields at the National Press Club Ballroom in 2019, entitled, "The Dangerous State of the World and the Need for Fit Leadership."[4] It submitted a petition to Congress during Donald Trump's impeachment proceedings with more than 700 mental health professional signatories.[5] It recently released a "Prescription for Survival," which argues that the president is "making a global pandemic worse."[6] In a petition, the group said that if Trump "were president of any major institution, it is likely the Board of Directors would have required him to undergo a comprehensive mental health assessment."[7]
