The World Orchid Conference (WOC) is an international event that brings together orchid enthusiasts, growers, and researchers from around the world. Held every three years, the WOC is hosted in a different location chosen through a bid process presented to the World Orchid Conference Trust (WOCT).
The WOC was initiated in 1952 by Gordon Dillon and held in St. Louis, MO, USA in October, 1954 through a collaboration between the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Orchid Society of Greater St. Louis, and the American Orchid Society.[1] The first WOC brought together over 600 amateurs, professionals, botanists, and collectors from around the globe and laid the groundwork for subsequent conferences.[2] Since its inception, the WOC has taken place on every continent, except Antartica. Seventeen different countries have hosted the WOC in 21 different cities from as far north as Glasgow, Scotland and as far south as Auckland, New Zealand.
The organization and planning for the World Orchid Conference is managed by the World Orchid Conference Trust (WOCT), whose mission is "to encourage and improve the science, education, conservation, art, and practice of horticulture as related to the Orchidaceae throughout the world by organizing and promoting the WOCs, other conferences, meetings, seminars, and lectures around the globe."
Upcoming events[edit]
The 23rd World Orchid Conference will be held Feb. 25th - March 10th, 2024 in Tainan, Taiwan.
The 23rd WOC was originally scheduled to be held March 9-18, 2020 at the former Flower Expo site in Waipu, Taichung, Taiwan, but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3] In place of in-person events a digital conference was instead held April 24th - May 3rd, 2021.[4]
