The World Padel Tour (WPT) is the most important professional padel championship in the world, in terms of the organisational level of the tournaments and for the participation of the best international players. Since 2017, it has been broadcast on television on Gol. From 2022 onwards, the World Padel Tour will be shown on Movistar + in Spain[1], as well as on the World Padel Tour TV app from the round of 32 onwards. In the United Kingdom, the BT Group is responsible for broadcasting the competitions.
The World Padel Tour tournaments began in 2013, positioning itself as the professional circuit of reference replacing the previous one, the Padel Pro Tour, and is the result of the agreement between the group of organisers of Professional Padel Tournaments, the Association of Professional Padel Players (AJPP) and the Spanish Women's Padel Association (AFEP). The WPT circuit is managed by SETPOINT EVENTS S.A., a subsidiary of S.A. DAMM, which establishes its regulations and guarantees, and endorses the quality parameters required by the same, as well as the prizes for professional padel players who participate in the circuit's tournaments.
Every year between 15 and 20 WPT tournaments are held plus a final master in which the best couples of the ranking play against each other. The participating players travel to different cities around the world to accumulate points and enter the final Master, where only the top 8 couples in the ranking will compete after completing the season. Both men's and women's events are played, although the number of women's WPT championships is fewer.
In terms of sport, some of the most significant players on the circuit are Fernando Belasteguín, Juani Mieres, Paquito Navarro, Sanyo Gutiérrez and Pablo Lima in men and Carolina Navarro, Cecilia Reiter, Mapi Sánchez Alayeto, Majo Sánchez Alayeto, Marta Marrero and Alejandra Salazar in women.
World Padel Tour has grown exponentially in terms of international impact and television audiences. This has led the professional circuit to expand in 2022 to a total of 13 countries in the most global season in its history and attracted the interest of large media corporations.
