World Scientists' Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

In 1992, the original “World Scientists' Warning to Humanity” was published by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).[1] A majority of the living Nobel Prize laureates in the sciences at the time signed the document, and about 1,700 of the worlds’ leading scientists appended their signatures to the document.[2]

In 2017, ecologist William J. Ripple in conjunction with seven other authors published a “World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice” on the 25th anniversary of the original document.[3] The new document evaluated and discussed the human response over the 25-year period from the original document with time-series data for ten items of environmental concern; Ozone depletors, Freshwater resources per capita, Reconstructed marine catch, Dead zone, Total forest, Vertebrate species abundance, CO2 emissions, Temperature change, Population of humans, and Population of ruminant livestock. The document concludes that since 1992, with the exception of stabilizing the stratosphere ozone layer, humanity has failed to make sufficient progress in generally solving these foreseen environmental challenges, and alarmingly, most of them are getting far worse. [4]

The paper was published with more than 15,000 scientist-only signatories from around the world. Additional signatories are encouraged to sign[5] online and by May 1, 2018, there were over 20,000 signatories. As such, the paper has become one of the most co-signed published journal articles of all time with an Altmetric in March 2018 of 7,100 and is gaining ground on the top paper from 2016, former United States President Barack Obama's United States Health Care Reform: Progress to Date and Next Steps, which accumulated a score of 8,063 in four months.[6]

The document was covered by major US and International news channels. (CNN[7], Forbes[8], Washington Post[9], Fox[10], CBC Canada[11], EurekAlert Australia[12], Arab News[13], Medias Monde France[14])
