The World Ski Awards are given to companies in the ski industry, and are administered by the British for-profit company World Media And Events Limited. The annual awards programme was launched in 2013, as the sister organisation to World Travel Awards, with the aim of driving up standards in the ski tourism sector.[1]
Ski tourism constitutes a significant segment of the travel and tourism industry. An estimated 350 million skier visits take place each year to more than 2,500 ski resorts.[2]
Every year, a series of World Ski Awards are presented to the leading brands and organisations in the ski industry. Categories include Best Ski Resort, Best Ski Hotel and Best Ski Chalet for each of the world’s largest 26 ski tourism nations (e.g. Switzerland’s Best Ski Resort).[3] Country winners go head-to-head for the respective world categories (e.g. World’s Best Ski Resort).[4][5]
Voting runs on a first-past-the-post basis, with the organisation receiving the most votes in a given category declared the winner.[6] Ski industry executives and the general public are eligible to vote. Votes are submitted online at the World Ski Awards website during a 16-week window.[7]
Finalists are invited to attend the annual World Ski Awards Gala Ceremony for the unveiling of the winners, who each collect a World Ski Awards trophy. Each year, the leading figureheads of the global ski industry attend. This year’s ceremony will take place in Kitzbühel, Austria on 21st November 2020 as the climax of a three-day itinerary of activities.[8] Kitzbühel has hosted all seven previous editions of the ceremony.
