World Trade Institute
The World Trade Institute (WTI) is a Swiss academic institution[1] engaged in the study of international economic law, investment regulation, economic globalisation and sustainability. It is directed by Professor Joseph Francois. A University of Bern centre of excellence with an international, interdisciplinary focus, the WTI explores the interconnections between the fields of law, economics and political science.
History[edit]
The Institute was founded in Bern in 1999 by the University of Bern, University of Fribourg and University of Neuchatel within the framework of the BeNeFri convention, [2] which calls for closer cooperation between the three universities of the Swiss plateau. It was created to train future trade practitioners following the establishment of the World Trade Organization.
Teaching[edit]
The WTI offers a doctoral programme within the Graduate School of Economic Globalisation and Integration,[3] a Master’s programme in international trade law and economics (MILE),[4] and a joint LL.M. and DAS (TRAIL+)[5].
Notable faculty on the Master’s programme include Mark Warner, Susan Ariel Aaronson, Arancha Gonzalez and Kym Anderson.
Research[edit]
The WTI hosts a number of research projects [6] related to the broad thematic areas of trade, investment and sustainability. From 2005 to 2017 the WTI was the leading research centre for the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Trade Regulation — funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Scientific papers by WTI researchers[7] are published in the World Trade Forum Book Series by Cambridge University Press and the BRILL World Trade Institute Advanced Studies series.[8] [9]
