Wycombe Arts Centre is an arts centre specialising in theatre, music, art and dance. A registered charity, its premises include a Cafe Space and a Theatre Space in the former St. John's Church, a Grade II* listed building.[5][6] It's located on Desborough Road in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.[7]

History[edit]

The St John's Church building was completed in 1901 and was designed by architect William Douglas Caröe (1857-1938).[8] After the First World War, a wooden triptych war memorial was added to the church.[9] It became a Grade II Listed building on 28th June 1973 due to its "inventive and interesting design by a leading architect of the late Gothic Revival".[10]

In 2010, it was announced that Wycombe District Council had bought the church and hall after it was scheduled for redundancy by the Oxford Diocesan Redundant Churches Committee and the Parochial Church Council as part of a reshuffle. The council planned to transform it into a "Centre for Creativity".[11]

The Arts Centre hosted its inaugural events in 2013, launching a year long campaign called Wycombe Awakes. This included a sound art exhibition called Wycombe Listens, with featured artists including Martin Creed, Jaap Blonk, Iain Chambers, Signal to Noise and Michael Fairfax.[12] The campaign also included a programme of events featuring performance maker Emma Frankland, Red Herring and Candoco Dance Company. [13] £10,000 of funding was provided by Arts Council England via the National Lottery Community Fund.[14]

Originally called Arts4Every1 at its inception, it was rebranded as Wycombe Arts Centre in 2018. In 2020, the organisation received a grant from the UK Government’s Culture Recovery Fund, delivered through Arts Council England.[15][16] The buildings are owned by Buckinghamshire Council.

Art[edit]

In April 2019, artist Bob Spriggs exhibited an installation called Community, an array of 100 pendulums that were each four metres long,[17]

In March 2021, artists Hayley Newell, Rupert Kalkalata and Dan ‘Decreate’ Wilson created a hand-painted mural showcasing Isembard Kingdom Brunel, the Red Lion and chairs on the hoardings around the Brunel Engine Shed opposite High Wycombe railway station as part of a joint project between Buckinghamshire Council, Wycombe Museum, HWBIDCo and Wycombe Arts Centre.[18]

In June 2021, resident artist Dan Wilson of Decreate painted a Kaiju monster fight mural of Godzilla vs King Kong. The mural was displayed as part of Bucks Art Weeks.[19]

Artists from Wycombe Arts Centre have also created a street gallery along Desborough Avenue by painting the shutters of shops in the area.[20]

Events[edit]

Wycombe Arts Centre has hosted a number of theatre and live music shows, including performances by Tankus the Henge, 3 Daft Monkeys, Cats in Space and Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash.[21] Other events include:

Wycombe Arts Centre is also the base for pioneering touring performance company Signdance Collective, the home of Chiltern Music Therapy and the regular venue for the High Wycombe branch of Skeptics in the Pub.[45][46][47] It was formerly the home of Wycombe Community Cinema and now hosts screenings as part of Films @ Wycombe Arts Centre.[48]
