Production[edit]
Development[edit]
In 2019, Larry Houston revealed he had discussion with Disney regarding a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-97), in which he worked as director and producer.[9] In 2020, having finished production on What If...? (2021), Marvel Studios began considering options for additional animated series. A revival of X-Men: The Animated Series was among the first ideas proposed, having been cited by filmmakers they collaborated with as "a touchstone".[10]:15:50–16:02[7] That year, executive Brad Winderbaum approached Beau DeMayo–who wrote episodes for Marvel Studios' Moon Knight–and asked him to develop a pitch for a revival.[11] By June 2021, three animated series were being developed at Marvel Studios Animation aside from What If...?,[12][13][14] and by August they weren't expected to not to come out until at least 2023.[15]
In November 2021, as a part of Disney+ Day, Marvel Studios announced a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series, titled X-Men '97,[16][17] with DeMayo set as head writer and executive producer.[18][7] Jake Casterona was announced as supervising director, while Charley Feldman was hired as supervising producer.[7] Houston and X-Men showrunners Eric and Julia Lewald were hired as consultant producers on the revival,[19][7] helping in regards to any "red flags" during development while also suggesting ideas.[20] Executive producers for the season also include Kevin Feige, Dana Vasquez-Eberhart, and Brad Winderbaum.[21]
Writing[edit]
The season has a "ten-premise story arc" described by Julia Lewald as a bible for the series.[5]:1:06:17–1:06:32 The series us set after the original series' finale, "Graduation Day", and sees the X-Men questioning theur future following the growing mutant sympathy after the attempt on Professor X's life, while Magneto joins them as leader in Xavier's honor thanks to the pro-mutant sentiment.[22]
Post-production[edit]
The series entered post-production by July 2023,[23] with some episodes having been completed by November of that year.[24]
