XLMedia (LSE: XLM) is a global digital performance publisher with offices in Cyprus.[4] XLMedia operates over 2,000 publishing assets across industry verticals, including online gambling, sports betting, and personal finance.[5] It utilizes its technology to deliver content to online consumers who are looking to decide which product or service to purchase. XLMedia is a publicly listed company on the London Stock Exchange (AIM).


History

The business was founded in 2008 as a result of the merger of two different businesses: Yaron Nahari’s and Assaf Levy’s “Webpals”; and Ory Weihs, an independent entrepreneur who was driving online gambling traffic through affiliates and by creating online gambling content.[6] With Ory Weihs as Chief Executive Officer, XLMedia made an initial public offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange in 2014.[7] From 2014 to 2019, XLMedia distributed cash dividends to its shareholders in the total amount of $74.95m.[8]

Several months after the IPO, XLMedia acquired ExciteAd Digital Marketing (EDM), also known for its trading name DAU-UP, for a consideration of up to $19 million in cash and shares.[9] Acquisitions continued, and in 2015, XLMedia acquired fifty-four percent of Marmar Media LTD. shares for a total consideration of up to $7.36 million in cash.[10]

In 2016, XLMedia’s revenues amounted to $104 million, which was sixteen percent higher than the previous year.[11] In 2017, XLMedia’s revenues increased by thirty-three percent, compared to 2016, reaching $137.6 million.[12] XLMedia’s adjusted earnings in 2017, its EBITDA, saw an increase of thirty-six percent, rising to $47.1m from 2016’s $34.6m.[12]

During 2017, XLMedia made more acquisitions, including the acquisition of ClicksMob Inc.’s business and assets in February for $5.1 million.[13] Later in 2017, ClicksMob Inc. and DAU-UP merged their businesses to form a mobile marketing-focused unit, which was sold two years later to an ad-tech and SaaS solutions provider.[14][15]

In August of that year, XLMedia bought the remaining shares of Marmar Media LTD.[16]

In 2018, XLMedia’s revenues came to $117.9 million – a decrease of fourteen percent compared to 2017.[17] However, XLMedia’s publishing revenues rose by four point six percent in 2018.[18] Personal finance assets also delivered strong results, causing XLMedia’s revenues to rise by six percent that year.[18]

Sports Betting

Freebets.com is one of the U.K. sports betting websites owned by XLMedia, which was purchased in 2014 for $6.7 million.[19][20] In 2019, the website won the “Best Sports Betting Affiliate” award at the Southern European Gaming Awards.[21] That same year, the site started working with BetRadar, a brand of Sportradar AG, to provide consumers with information before they place their bets.[22] Freebets.com also offers consumers tips for top events in the U.K., provided by Peter Scudamore.[23]

Bingo

WhichBingo.co.uk is an online bingo community portal, acquired by XLMedia in 2018.[24] It is one of the oldest affiliate websites in the U.K. and provides reviews of online bingo sites.[25] It runs its own annual WhichBingo awards that honor the best industry affiliates.[26]

Online Gambling

Casino.se is a Swedish online casino review website owned and operated by XLMedia.[27] In 2018, Swedish BOS Secretary-General, Gustaf Hoffstedt, gave an interview to Casino.se, talking about what new Swedish legislation means for players.[28] In 2019, the website was shortlisted for “Casino Affiliate of the Year” by the SBC Awards.[27]

Personal Finance

GreedyRates.ca is a personal finance website and the company’s first acquisition in the sector, purchased in January 2017 for a total of $9.3 million.[29] The website specializes in credit card comparisons.[29]

MoneyUnder30.com is a financial services comparison website acquired by XLMedia in 2017 for $7 million.[30]

The website was named one of the best finance blogs to read by Kiplinger.[31] Other media outlets cite information from the website in their articles, such as Forbes[32] and USA Today[33]. In 2019, the website conducted a “Millennials Financial Independence Survey,” and the findings were published in digital publications.[34]

InvestorJunkie.com is another XLMedia personal finance asset, acquired for $5.8 million in 2018.[35] The site provides information on financial products and services, such as robo-advisors.[36][37]

Technology

SecureThoughts.com – a U.S. website that compares cybersecurity products, acquired by XLMedia for $2 million in June 2017.[38]

Executives and Board of Directors

Ory Weihs served as XLMedia’s Chief Executive Officer until October 2019, when he was replaced by Stuart Simms, who previously served as CEO of Rakuten Marketing LLC.[39][40] Ory continues to assist XLMedia’s Board as a Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Risk Committee.[41][42][43]

Another figure on XLMedia’s Board of Directors is Christopher Bell, serving as an Independent Non-Executive Chairman.[44] Richard Barry Rosenberg serves on XLMedia’s Board as an Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee.[43][45] Amit Ben Yehuda also holds the title of Non-Executive Director on the Board.[46] In 2017, Jonas Martensson joined the Board as a Non-Executive Director and serves as Chairman of the Remuneration Committee.[47][48]
