Xi Omicron Iota (ΞOI, also known as Xi Om) is a local women's sorority founded on February 2, 2002 at Missouri State University.[1]
History
Xi Omicron Iota was founded at Missouri State University on February 2, 2002[2]. Initially, the idea to begin a local sorority came from Samantha Brown and Tracy Dailey. They decided to start a chapter that offered the opportunity of sorority life without the high cost or live-in requirements of National Sororities[3]. They were joined by co-founders Brandei Harris, Tracy's classmate; LeAnn O'Dell, Samantha's high school friend; and Helen Herschel, a student on campus who had an idea to begin a similar organization. The first recruitment was held in March 2002 and the first new member class was composed of 22 women, ranging from freshmen to seniors.
Symbols
Each founder chose a symbol to represent them in the Xi Omicron Iota crest:
- Gemini Symbol - The Gemini symbol represents Founder Samantha Brown. She chose this symbol because she has the typical two-sided Gemini personality, creative and analytical, which helped Xi Omicron Iota thrive.
- Bulldog - The bulldog represents Founder Tracy Dailey. The bulldog represents the lovable, but tough attitude that the members of Xi Omicron Iota needed to have in the early years.
- Treasure Chest - The treasure chest represents Founder LeAnn O'Dell. LeAnn was the first treasurer of Xi Omicron Iota and helped ensure dues were low.
- Scroll - The scroll represents Founder Brandei Harris. Brandei helped advertise Xi Omicron Iota and provided critical contributions to publicity.
- Sun - The sun represents Founder Helen Herschel. Helen helped create a warm and comfortable environment for many early members.
Other Xi Omicron Iota symbols include:
- Official Colors - Pink and yellow are the official colors of Xi Omicron Iota.
- Official Flower - The daisy is the official flower of Xi Omicron Iota.
