Dr. Yılmaz Argüden (b. 1958, Eskişehir), strategist and governance expert.[1]

He is the founder and chairman of ARGE Consulting.[2][3][4] He served as chairman of Rothschild & Co. Türkiye[5], chairman of Erdemir[6][7], chair of the Trustees of Argüden Governance Academy[8], vice-chair of Turkish Basketball Federation[9] During his career, he has served as an independent board member for more than 70 companies in 4 different jurisdictions.[5] He has taught classes at the Boğaziçi.[10] and Koç[11] Universities. He also taught strategy classes at the Turkish Military Academy[12]. He has published 40+ books and 700+ articles and columns. He is a social entrepreneur, who has founded and/or led numerous NGOs. As the Chairman of the KalDer[13] (Turkish Quality Association), he initiated the National Quality Movement[14] which introduced new standards of quality in private and public sectors as well as NGOs throughout the country. As the elected chairman of Global Compact Local Networks, he served on the board of UN Global Compact[15] He also served as vice chair of Governance Committee of Business at OECD.[16] and as a member of IFC’s Corporate Governance Private Sector Advisory Group[17] He was selected as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum.[18]

Education[edit]

Graduated from Tarsus American College with the top GPA at senior year where he also played for the TAC Basketball Team that won the National Basketball Championship in 1976.[19]

Received his B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the Boğaziçi University, where he received both the Top Graduating Engineer Award and the President’s Prize for Student Leadership for initiating the first international SportsFest as the Chair of the University Sports Club (1980). He was also a member of the University basketball team that won National Championships twice in a row (1977 & 1978).[20]

He received his PhD in policy analysis from the Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School with General Distinction.[21][22]

Throughout his education, he received scholarships from Fulbright, TÜBİTAK, and NATO.

Work Experience[edit]

  • Started his career in 1977 in Koç Holding R&D Center.
  • Worked as a policy analyst for RAND Corporation between 1980-85.
  • Represented the World Bank in over 100 loan negotiations with more than 20 countries between 1985-88.
  • Upon his government’s invitation, he took a leave of absence from World Bank to head the Turkish Privatization Program between 1988-90.
  • Served as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz in 1991.
  • Founded ARGE Consulting in 1991 to improve quality of management for Turkish companies.
  • Served as the Chair of Erdemir between 1997-99.
  • Initially selected as the Senior Advisor of Rothschild & Co investment bank in 2005, later in 2006 he became the Country Representative of Rothschild, and in 2007 he was appointed as the Chairman of the newly established Rothschild – Türkiye.
  • Served on the board of numerous companies including Sümerbank, Petkim, Koç Holding, Anadolu Group, Bilim İlaç, Borusan, Inmet Mining, Vestel, DeFacto, Dogus Automotive, AKİŞ GYO.
