Ya Dom (Thai Inhaler)

Ya Dom (Thai : ยาดม) is a Thai inhaler. “Ya” in Thai means medicine and “Dom” is Thai verb that means to sniff.

Ya Dom is one of the household remedies in Thailand used for relieving some symptoms, for instance, dizziness or nasal congestion which is aromatic treatment when users sniff.

Ingredients[edit]

Different ingredients can make unique scents of inhaler. The basic ingredients are essential oil such as Eucalyptus oil, Menthol, Camphor, Borneol and Herbs.

How to make Ya Dom[edit]

Many Thai inhalers come in liquid form, made from small pieces of dried herbs that have been soaked in essential oil. Cotton is used for absorbing the essential oil and put it in roller bottles, regular bottles and jars. (Thai inhalers (Ya Dom), n.d. , How to make Ya Dom, para 4)

Types of inhaler[edit]

There are two main types : Nasal stick inhaler and Liquid inhaler

Nasal stick inhaler[edit]

This inhaler has cotton that absorbs the essential oils inside the stick. To inhale the essential oil, the user must sniff the aroma from the inhaler. The stick should not be put into nasal cavity because it can contaminate or the nose can get irritated from chemicals from the essential oil. (Wongkrajang., 2012, Thai inhalers usage, para 6)

Liquid inhaler[edit]

This inhaler comes in clear water. Some has different colors depending on the colors of the essential oil and herbs. The liquid is contained in both regular bottles and roller bottles. This type of inhaler is often applied on a handkerchief or above the upper lip for proper sniffing.
