Yahya Ekhou, born 1990,
He is an author and human rights defender and Head of Liberals Mauritania.
Ekhou was raised in a religious Muslim family, who were part of one of the tribes with great influence in Mauritania. He now identifies as an author and human rights defender. He has been living away from his homeland, residing in exile in Germany, for quite a few years now.[1][2][3]
Career
- He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Faculty of Law, Cairo Cairo University.
- Since 2022, Yahya Ekhou has served as a board member for the German organization "Säkulare Flüchtlingshilfe."[4][5]
In 2022, Alibri [6] published Ekhou's German-language autobiography "Freie Menschen kann man nicht zähmen" [7] ('Free people cannot be tamed').[8]
Leander Sukov, a German writer and member of the German PEN Center, strongly recommended that the book be integrated into classroom curricula and be utilized as a valuable resource for teaching in schools.[9]
Awards and Recognition and Conferences
- In 2024, Ekhou participated in the Venice School for Human Rights Defenders, facilitated by the Global Campus of Human Rights.[10] [11]
- He was a speaker at the Celebrating Dissent Conference in Cologne, Germany, held on August 20th and 21st, 2022.[12][13][14]
- He participated as a speaker at the SECULAR HUMAN RIGHTS WEEK in Berlin, from November 11th to November 18th, 2018.[15]
- He was honored with the Distinguished Arab Youth Award for 2017 by the Arab Youth Council and the League of Arab States.[16][17]
- On 15 May 2024, he attended the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy.[18]
