Yashvir Sabharwal is an Indian-American student researcher and competition organizer. He is known for work on neural decoding (EEG and fMRI reconstruction) and for co-founding the International Research Olympiad (IRO), a global initiative promoting student research and scientific literacy.[1][2]
Early life and education
Sabharwal attended Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Virginia, where he was active in extracurricular science and leadership programs.[1] He is pursuing an A.B. in Neuroscience and Economics at Harvard College. A public Google Scholar profile lists his publications and contact information.[3]
Research and academic work
Sabharwal’s work includes neural decoding projects aiming to reconstruct aspects of natural vision from fMRI and EEG data.[4] He contributed to MedARC on the MindEye visual reconstruction effort; an associated paper acknowledges his contributions.[5] He later worked with Alljoined, an EEG-to-image decoding effort released as the Alljoined/Alljoined1 dataset.[4]
His high-school project, NephroNet, applied convolutional neural networks and diffusion models to renal carcinoma histopathology and received recognition at the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair (VSSEF).[6][7] InsideNoVa profiled his research and competitive results.[1]
In 2025, his work received recognition at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).[8]
International Research Olympiad
In 2023, Sabharwal co-founded the International Research Olympiad (IRO), a competition aimed at teaching research methods and analytical skills. By 2025, IRO reported research clubs in more than 300 schools across 89 countries and participation exceeding 10,000 students.[2] [9] The Indian Eye described the event as “a global platform bringing together young innovators from nearly ninety countries, fostering critical thinking and research literacy,” while Tracy Press reported that finalists placed among the “top one percent globally” in qualifying stages.[10][11]
Civil Air Patrol
Sabharwal has participated in Civil Air Patrol activities in Virginia.[1]
