yc.news is an American entertainment and gossip website that debuted on September 1, 2014. The outlet has been owned by the publisher Original Media Group Corporation, a not-for-profit news agency headquartered in Philadelphia. The publication operates as a cooperative, unincorporated association. The mission of yc.news is to inform the nation with accurate, controversial news stories, all of which are drafted and published by its staff journalists and freelance reporters. Original Media Group Corporation's Chief Content Officer, Nik Hatziefstathiou, oversees the publication.[1]
Notable Coverage
While a photojournalist was covering a shooting in the City of Chester for a local television client on August 14, 2017, a gunman opened fire on the same block. The photojournalist was not injured, but the story made local headlines after NBC broke the story on their morning show.[2]
On July 23, 2017, yc.news reported that a man was killed after an argument turned deadly in the City of Chester.[3]
On August 22, 2017, a train crash sent 42 injured passengers to the hospital.[4] yc.news broke the story and was cited nationally, sparking national media attention.[5]
On September 6, 2017, yc.news reported that a woman was the victim of a home invasion in Upper Darby, Delaware County.[6] The perpetrators dressed as delivery drivers and tricked their way into the victim's house where they tied her up, robbed, and assaulted her.[7] The story was picked up by all of the local news television networks.[8]
On October 30, 2017, yc.news reported that a man was shot by police in a parking garage at the King of Prussia Mall.[9] The story quickly became the focus of local news outlets after yc.news revealed the suspect was responsible for several robberies in the mall parking lot.[10]
On August 1, 2018, yc.news was first to report that J.R. Smith of the Cleveland Cavaliers allegedly stole a Penn State student's cell phone and threw it into a nearby construction site.[11] The story was picked up by TMZ and cited nationally.[12]
On April 24, 2018, a photographer from yc.news captured one of two images of Meek Mill being released from prison and entering a helicopter.[13] The reporter allegedly snuck through a police barricade for the photo that ultimately wound up on TMZ and other outlets.[14]
Bill Cosby
While covering the Bill Cosby sexual assault trial, Montgomery County attempted to bar yc.news from the court proceedings. yc.news' parent company Original Media Group Corporation immediately filed a motion fighting the ban, stating their publication was being treated unfairly and accused Montgomery County of violating the First Amendment by excluding yc.news from the courtroom. The publication was granted two courtroom media credentials by Judge Steven T. O'Neill after he ruled in the publication's favor.[15]
Throughout the Bill Cosby trial, yc.news was accused of working with the comedian's team to publish stories after Page Six, a New York Post publication, reported two yc.news reporters were granted special access not available to other networks. The rumor was never refuted.[16]
Nik Hatziefstathiou Controversy
In June 2019, former Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun Copeland claimed Hatziefstathiou, in his role as an executive at Original Media, took part in an alleged “fake news” story that accused local authorities of racism. He was charged on July 24, 2019, in connection to the accusations.
Hatziefstathiou, who goes by the nickname “Nik the Hat,” has denied the charges, asserting that the email he touted on his website, YC News, was a legitimate document.
Prosecutors claim Hatziefstathiou, while under official capacity as an editor, falsified a government document to create the suspected racist email
On May 25, 2019, Your Content published an exposé that included images of a purported email from an individual identified as a supervisor in Delaware County Adult Probation and Parole Office using a racial slur and giving advice about how to apply for a job with the county. The redacted email reads as follows: “Good morning, you don’t have to worry about job security … ROFL … so long as there’s a n---- in our county, you will have a full slate. Just make sure he registers as a (redacted) before applying, they’re extremely strict about that. Can’t have a bunch of gangbangs loving (redacted) in here … ha. (sic).”
In a statement, then-District Attorney Kat Copeland said: “To quote Benjamin Franklin, ‘It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.’ Creating an article full of lies, Nikolaos Hatziefstathiou attempted to destroy the reputation of hard working people who come to this courthouse every day to serve their community. Hatziefstathiou chose to falsely attribute horrific, racial slurs to good, hard working probation officers, exploiting the real pain that minorities face every day, all in an effort to create racial discord. In one fell swoop he attempted to decimate years of well-earned, good reputations. Some elected officials and politicians jumped on Hatziefstathiou’s bandwagon, knowing these claims may be false, and were willing to believe the very worst about people without a shred of evidence. The fact that they then stood on the county courthouse steps criticizing our innocent county employees is a testament to how little people value the truth. I sincerely hope that the true story about what happened here would receive the same amount of publicity that his crimes did because the hard-working, honest employees of this county deserve nothing less – in fact they deserve an apology.”
On November 6, 2019, Jack Stollsteimer was elected to unseat Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun Copeland.
Copeland, who centered a majority of her election platform around Hatziefstathiou’s arrest, accused Stollsteimer of assisting him in the alleged fake news report.
Just before the election, John Reilly, Jr., a high-ranking Delaware County official eerily similar to the one referenced in the YC News publication resigned from his position after an explosive investigative report by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Hatziefstathiou responded to the charges in early 2020, issuing a statement that read in part:
“Hypocrites get offended by the truth & in turn silence individuals by any means necessary.”
Michael Sanchez, brother of Jeff Bezos' girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, said he was vindicated by the latest revelation in the saga of leaked texts that exposed Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's affair in 2019.
Hatziefstathiou, the reporter who covered the story, claimed that Lauren Sanchez's ex-husband Patrick Whitesell tipped off the National Enquirer, which broke the story, not Michael Sanchez. Mr. Sanchez has been in an ongoing legal battle with Bezos, who sued him in January to recover legal fees after Sanchez's defamation case against Bezos was dismissed last year.
"The AMI whistleblower confirmed what Michael Sanchez has always maintained – he was not AMI’s sole source, the story was already in the can before the Enquirer even reached out to him, and however AMI got its hands on the ‘below-the-belt selfie’ it used to try to blackmail Mr. Bezos, it did not come from Mr. Sanchez," Michael Sanchez’s lawyer Tom Warren told The Wrap. "We look forward to reviewing the 10 terabytes of additional evidence in the possession of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office."
Michael Sanchez's lawyers included reporter Nik Hatziefstathiou's claim in a recent filing.
