History

York Acorn were formed in 1973 by Pete Warters and Tony Winn,[1] with the Acorn name due to the club originally being based at the Acorn pub in York city centre.[2] The club moved to their current location at Thanet Road, Acomb in 1991, where they operate multiple pitches and changing rooms alongside the Acorn Sports & Social Club.[3]

York Acorn reached the third round of the Challenge Cup in 2006 and 2008.[4] In the 2007/08 season, York Acorn earned promotion from National Conference League Division One to the Premier Division for the first time in the club's history.[5] In their debut season in the NCL Premier Division they finished fifth in the league[6] and reached the play-offs again the following season with a sixth-place finish.[7] In the 2010/11 season, York Acorn were relegated to Division One,[8] but secured promotion back to the Premier Division in 2012.[9] In 2012, York Acorn reached the third round of the Challenge Cup, where they lost 28–20 to Gateshead Thunder.[10] Between 2012 and 2016, their Yorkshire Men's League side reached the final of the pre-season Forty20 Cup five times and won the competition in 2013 and 2016.[11] In the National Conference League, York Acorn were relegated from the Premier Division at the end of the 2013 season.[12]

In 2015, York Acorn defeated Normanton Knights 30–22 in the NCL Division One play-off decider to earn promotion to the Premier Division.[13] York Acorn were relegated back to Division One the following season after finishing bottom of the league.[14] York Acorn reached the play-off final in 2017, but lost to Normanton,[15] and following a mid-table finish in 2018,[16] York Acorn finished Division One in second place in 2019 to return to the NCL Premier Division. In 2023, York Acorn recorded their best league finish to date in the summer league era, finishing in seventh place in the Premier Division.

In 2024, the club reached the fifth round of the Challenge Cup following victories against Orrell St James, Cornwall and Wath Brow Hornets.[17][18] It is the first time York Acorn have reached this stage of the competition.[19]
