The Young European Left Alliance, abbreviated as YELA (/ˈjɛlə/ YEL-ə), is a left-wing European political youth organisation affiliated with the European Left Alliance for the People and the Planet. YELA was founded on 25 June 2026[1] and it currently has 11 member organisations from 10 different European countries.[2] YELA aims to unite left-wing, green and feminist youth organisations in the fight against fascism, imperialism and climate inaction.[3]
History
Background
The origins of the Young European Left Alliance trace back to the European Network of Democratic Young Left (ENDYL), an independent network of left-wing youth organisations founded in Copenhagen in May 1994, which some of YELA's member organisations were also members of.[4] After ENDYL's dissolution between 2012–2014, some of its former member organisations participated in the youth initiatives of the Party of the European Left.[5]
Youth organisations affiliated with European Left member parties were members of the European Left Youth Network (ELYN), which functioned as a working group of the European party instead of an independent organisation.[6] In 2023, ELYN delegates agreed in principle to transform the network into an autonomous youth organisation, but this change was not implemented by the time ELYN split.[7]
Split from the Party of the European Left
In September 2024, the European Left Alliance for the Planet and the People (ELA) was formed after the Red–Green Alliance (Denmark) voted 14–10 to leave the Party of the European Left.[8] Following the split, the youth organisations affiliated with ELA member parties initially remained within the European Left Youth Network, on the expectation that its planned transformation into an autonomous body would allow it to cooperate with both parties, potentially avoiding a similar split at the youth level.[5]
At ELYN's general assembly at the European Forum on 9 November 2024, delegates voted to remain linked only to the European Left rather than establishing ties to both parties. Failing to have secured support for their proposal, youth organisations of ELA affiliated parties began to plan the creation of an ELA youth organisation.[5]
Formation
The creation of the Young European Left Alliance was announced on June 29, 2026 by the European Left Alliance.[9] YELA is described as a new European platform uniting left-wing, green and feminist youth organisations in the fight against fascism, imperialism and climate inaction[10] grounded in anti-fascism, feminism, environmentalism and anti-imperialism.[9] Member of the European Parliament Emma Fourreau and Anders Nyeland were elected as the first co-presidents of the organisation,[10] with Sofia Lopes serving as the secretary general and Valtteri Harakka as the treasurer.[9]
Members
The Young European Left Alliance currently has ten full member organisations and one associate member organisation.[2] Its members are the youth wings and organisations of European Left Alliance member parties, except for the youth organisations EH Bildu.[9][11]
