Youngstarr Beatz
Brandon Michael Henshaw (born May 10, 1989), known professionally as Youngstarr Beatz, is an American record producer.[1] He is best known for producing trap beats for several Southern hip hop artists on many commercially successful singles, including "Do the Ricky Bobby" by B-Hamp and "I Luv Dem Strippers" by 2 Chainz.
Early Life
Henshaw was born in Cherry Point, North Carolina, the oldest of four children; he has three younger sisters. His father, Shawn Octave King, was formerly in the Marines in the 1980s. His mother, Talaya King, was a former Medical Billing Associate. He did not grow up in a musical family, although his mother was musically inclined. While growing up, Henshaw was very athletic, participating in basketball with dreams of becoming a professional athlete.[2]
Even though his life wasn't centered around music he developed a love for hip-hop. Henshaw turned to something that had only ever been a hobby: music. He first developed his talent for music by rapping all over his neighborhood. He began practicing on a software program called FL Studio a friend had given him during his senior year, when they made music as a group called Dynasty. He decided to use the name YoungStarr from a childhood nickname playing basketball.[2]
Career
2009 - 2012: Production
After about 6 months of working with FL Studio, Henshaw soon began hanging out at local studios and reaching out to local artists to rap on his beats for free, but nobody would. Then he met B-Hamp. Together, they created the song "Do the Ricky Bobby" in 2009, and it was an overnight success. Henshaw suddenly had many opportunities to produce many songs for well-known local artists that received airplay in Texas.[2] But having bigger records was another matter.
In 2010, Henshaw met Anthony Johnson professionally known as Tarzzahn. They met through a mutual friend and instantly clicked. Youngstarr executive produced Tarzzahn's first studio album Jungle Muzik (2011), including its lead single "So Fly". He produced 12 tracks on that album including the pop song "Pu$$y Poppa". The song was originally created late 2010 in Tarzzahn’s mom’s house. They planned to release the song along with the album, but they didn’t get the chance to due to Tarzzahn going to prison in 2011.[3]
In 2012, Henshaw found out 2 Chainz was coming to Dallas. Henshaw was so focused on getting his music to the Georgia (U.S. state) rapper, he and a friend sat in the Hilton Anatole parking lot for hours waiting for him to get off his tour bus.[2] Henshaw finally gave 2 Chainz a beat cd with his info written on it. A few months later, 2 Chainz personally phoned Henshaw about the "I Luv Dem Strippers" record. Months later Henshaw and 2 Chainz linked up. 2 Chainz played Youngstarr the record before Nicki Minaj was on it. Henshaw later found out that Nicki Minaj was featured on the record. That song changed Youngstarr’s life forever. A few weeks later, Henshaw was flown out for the video alongside many major artists such as 2 Chainz, Nicki Minaj, Jeezy, T.I. & his wife Tiny.[4] The single was released August 14, 2012, and although it did not chart, the record was certified gold.
2013 - Present:
Youngstarr would go on to build relationships with artists such as Kid Ink, Boosie Badazz, Yo Gotti, Rich Homie Quan, Lil Wayne, Birdman (rapper) and R. Kelly. Early 2013, Youngstarr co-produced along with producer Ronnie D the single "We Been On" from Rich Gang (album) that was released July 16, 2013.
On November 22, 2013, Youngstarr produced "Fired Up", a single for Kid Ink that also features Styles P.[2]
On December 26, 2013, 2 Chainz released the single "Twerk Season" that also featured Lil Wayne, produced by Youngstarr.[2]
In 2015, Henshaw met Yo Gotti. They began working on his mixtape "The Return". That mixtape released September 11, 2015. Youngstarr produced 4 tracks on that project. Almost 2 months later on November 27, 2015, Yo Gotti released his 8th studio album CM8: Any Hood America, in which Youngstarr produced 2 tracks on it.
On May 24, 2016, artist Currensy released "Supply & Demand" from his mixtape Bourbon Street Secrets, in which Youngstarr produced 2 tracks on including a record called "Kilo Jam".[5] [6]
Late 2016, Henshaw produced Yo Gotti's "81", the intro to his 20th and first retail mixtape White Friday. It was released December 23, 2016. [1][7]
Influences
In interviews, Youngstarr has named several musical influences. In a Canvas Reel interview he says that "watching producers who have inspired me all my life have chemistry with so many artists such as Swizz Beats & DMX/Ruff Ryders, Timbaland & Missy Elliot/Aaliyah, Mannie Fresh & Cash Money, Rick Rubin & Run DMC, Quincy Jones & Michael Jackson. I can name for days". He says he feels the "accomplishments these legendary people have made have been life changing for the world. How can anyone not look up to that?"[1]
Personal Life
Youngstarr, who grew up in New Bern, North Carolina, was raised around family. He didn't have the best, but he did have family. Due to his father being a Marine, he moved around often, from North Carolina to Louisiana to Texas. Henshaw got into music in 2005 and has always been musically inclined. As he stated in a Canvas Reel interview, he got his passion for music from his mom. He started rapping at the age of 15. In 2007 when Henshaw moved to Dallas, he met a guy named Joey, who had a rap group making their own beats. Youngstarr would go over to Joey’s house after school and would see him making beats on the program “FL Studio.” One day Youngstarr asked if he would show him how to work the program. Joey showed Youngstarr the basics and gave him the program to take home. In between practices and school, Henshaw would practice making beats and the more he practiced the more interested he became.[1]
Production Equipment
Youngstarr Beatz uses a variety of production equipment to create beats. His gear includes FL Studio, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, MIDI keyboard and multiple plugins.[1]
Marvel Hitz Production Team
In 2010, Youngstarr started his own production company called Marvel Hitz. Marvel Hitz is a company that manages a group of producers as a team. Henshaw personally specializes in being the face of the company, meeting new people from writers, other producers, artists, A&R's, executives, & building relationships. Henshaw has previously stated that "as a company, he is most proud of creating a company that believes in dope producers that haven’t had the opportunity for their music to be heard."[4]
