Youssoumba
Youssoumba is one of the main Ivorian musical styles, originating from the south of Ivory Coast.
History
This musical style is derived from the popular songs and other village animations of the lagoon peoples. However, it was in the 1990s that the group Aboutou Roots made it known on the Ivorian and West African music scene, and turned it into a complete genre, which they called ‘’youssoumba ‘’.[1]
Particularities
Originally, it is played with a drum, a bottle and harmonized voices that sing along with the lead vocal. But both in its traditional and modernized versions, youssoumba is a very lively and danceable genre. It is the mapouka dance that is associated with it and whose term is sometimes used to designate the Youssoumba.[2][3][4]
