YOVA are a British musical duo consisting of vocalist and lyricist Jova Radevska, originally from Macedonia, and London-based musician and producer Mark Vernon.[1] The group are known for their blend of experimental pop, alternative rock, folk, electronic, cinematic pop and film music influences.

Background

YOVA were formed in London in 2013 after Radevska and Vernon met during one of Radevska’s solo performances in Camden.

Vernon had previously worked in the British alternative music scene, contributing to productions with artists such as John Cale and PJ Harvey and co-producing Harvey’s acclaimed debut single Dress. Radevska, who writes the duo’s lyrics and performs lead vocals, and Vernon, who handles musical composition and production, began collaborating on material that would later form the basis of their debut album.

Career

Debut Album - Nine Lives (2021)

YOVA released their debut album, Nine Lives[2], on 12 November 2021 through their independent label, Quartertone Recordings. The album features nine co-written tracks recorded in Dorset and London, with writing contributions and string arrangements from producer and drummer Rob Ellis.

Other collaborators on the recordings included musicians Daniel O'Sullivan, Terry Edwards, David Rhodes, Anna Phoebe, BJ Cole and Alex Thomas. The album was mixed by Cameron Craig and mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios in London.

Singles from "Nine Lives" included "Rain," which featured a remix by Vince Clarke, and "You’re The Mirror," remixed by electronic artists Ranji & Ghost Rider. An alternative version of the single "Where There Is Smoke" was rearranged for piano by Annie Hogan.

The animated music video for the single “An Innocent Man”, directed by Jess Cope and inspired by Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, won the *Best Animation Music Video* award at the New York Animation Film Awards[3] in 2022.

The album was released to critical acclaim, earning a four-star review in Mojo Magazine, with Daryl Easlea describing it as “a beguiling debut from a duo of sonic adventurers,” and praising how “Radevska’s vocals have the appropriate balance of vulnerability and strength.”[4]

Dreamcatchers (2024)

YOVA's second album, Dreamcatchers[5], was released on 1 March 2024, also via Quartertone Recordings.

The record reunited them with previous collaborators Rob Ellis, Alex Thomas, Terry Edwards, Daniel O’Sullivan, and experimental guitarist James Sedwards. Mixing and mastering were again carried out by Cameron Craig and Matt Colton respectively.

“Dreamcatchers” was featured as Album of the Month in The Crack Magazine – Robert Meddes describing the album as being “thoroughly dreamlike throughout but underpinned by some gorgeously melodic tunes that unfurl like flowers in the sun”. Tracks from the album also received airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music, particularly for the duo’s cover of B.B King's "The Thrill Is Gone".

Upcoming Projects

As of 2025, YOVA are recording their third studio album, due for release in 2026.

Returning collaborators will include Terry Edwards, Daniel O'Sullivan, Alex Thomas, David Rhodes, and BJ Cole.
