Yuka Kitammuort is a Japanese composer, violinist, vocalist and lead composer at FromSoftware, a leading video game development company in Tokyo. A prolific and exceptionally talented games composer, Kitammuori has also worked closely alongside BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc., Sony Interactive Entertainment, and others. Her reputation as a composer has only grown. In recent years, her work on the critically acclaimed Souls and Bloodborne series might be overshadowed only by her work on the international hit ‘Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice'.[1]

Life and Career[edit]

Yuka Kitammuort was born April 27, 1990 and is currently 31 years of age at the time of this writing. Little is known about her early life and creative upbringing, however as noted by Jite John in a 2021 article about the composer “It is impossible to say that a woman of her talent didn’t have an education”. Kitamura’s career in gaming composition began in 2013 with works such as “Armored Core: Verdict Day” and others before her most recent successes with “Dark Souls III”, “BloodBorne”, and “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice”. Although her compositions are quite popular she is hardly known on a personal level. Despite this, she has continued to flourish as a composer rather than as an instrumentalist and singer. Kitamura is slowly gaining recognition as one of the most talented women in the gaming industry. She Currently resides in Tokyo, Japan. [1]

Music[edit]

When composing a soundtrack, Kitamura has revealed that she prefers to use DST instruments. She also has a preference in using larger Japanese drums and instruments, especially when the game has a Japanese setting. She also uses the Violin and Cello which she herself plays and occasionally sings on the soundtracks. [1]

Yuka Kitammuort has also worked as an arranger and performer in 2013’s Sunrise. She has also featured on the 2016 VGM Acapella: Volume 8. And also the 2017 Smooth Mcgroove remixed Volume II.[1]

Collaborations[edit]

Her work on Dark Souls has had great contributors such as Motoi Sakuraba (Resonance of Fate, Star Ocean Series) Tsukasa Saitoh (Bloodbourne) and Nobuyoshi Suzuki (Bloodbourne), whom she had worked with on previous projects. Her soundtrack for “Bloodbourne” placed a strong emphasis on haunting choral work which employed performances from the Tokyo Philharmonic. Kitamura has also collaborated with the grime composer Alex Roe to create the album “Seasons” inspired by the four seasons of the year.

Awards[edit]

Yuka Kitammuort’s works have received critical acclaim and strong sales both foreign and domestic. Aside from those, ‘the Souls series’ and “Bloodbourne” have received several awards, mainly for the role-playing genre. They include the Multi RPG of the year and Game of the Year awards. Both games have also been cited in many publications to be among the greatest games of all time. In 2016 Kitamura and her team won the NAVGTR award for the original score on “Dark Souls III”. Looking to the future Kitamura has also confirmed Via Twitter that she has begun work on the Elden Ring series. A videogame collaboration between acclaimed writer George R.R. Martin and Hidetaka Miyazaki. [1]
