Yuni Ahn

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Yuni Ahn is a Korean-born creative designer, known mostly for her work with Celine, Maison Kitsuné and Stella McCartney[1]. She continues to work in fashion, with experience in both womenswear and menswear. Ahn grew up in various cities in South Korea before moving around to pursue her singing career[2]. Once in London, the creative decided to instead focus on fashion by attending the arts college of Central Saint Martins in London, England.[2] This decision led her to work for some of the most notable labels in the fashion industry as mentioned previously.

Early life

Ahn was born in the city of Busan, South Korea. She grew up in this large city, later moving to Incheon, another large city near Seoul in South Korea. At the age of 20, Ahn decided to move to Taiwan in order to pursue a career in singing.[2] Throughout this career she briefly lived in Hong Kong and it eventually brought her to London.[2] In 1999, the artist decided to end her career in music in order to pursue her studies at the College of Central Saint Martins in London, England.[2]

Education and career

Education

The creative started in the fashion world with her time at Central Saint Martins in London, England.[3] The college offers a variety of programs, Ahn studied at the college of arts in the Design and Print program.[1] Though she completed her degree, Ahn was hired for a position before she graduated. This was a product of connections Ahn had made throughout her time at the college, leading to her working with Stella McCartney in launching McCartney's brand.[1][4]

Stella McCartney

Ahn's time at Stella McCartney consisted of building the brand, particularly in the early stages as Ahn began her time at the fashion house the same year it was founded, in 2001.[1] This contribution involved curating the architecture of a handful of the earlier stores as well as the house's concept boutique called Tad. Ahn's time with the brand ended with her decision to work freelance.

Freelance

With Ahn's decision to work freelance led to her partnership with a variety of other brands and fashion houses. Most notably, her work with Phoebe Philo at Celine and Chloé, Miuccia Prada at Miu Miu and Paul Smith.[1][4][5][6]

With Celine, Ahn's work comprised mostly of freelance and then returning to the brand in 2017 as Design Director.[7][8] While hired as a freelance creative, she was trusted in assisting Philo in bringing a new era to the brand.[3][9] As Design Director, Ahn was tasked with overseeing the pre-season and show collections, through detailed accessories like bags, jewelry and sunglasses.[4][10][9]

Her other freelance work involved a variety of tasks such as working on ready-to-wear, accessories and interior projects.

Maison Kitsuné

At the end of December 2018, one month prior to Paris Fashion Week, the fashion-music fusion brand announced their decision to appoint Ahn as their first external designer for the Creative Director position at the fashion house.[4][5][10][11][12][6][7][13][3] The founders of the French label had initially met Ahn through her regular patronage at the brand's coffee shop in the gardens of the Palais Royal due to its proximity to the Celine offices.[1][9] The partnership came to light after the brand's founders, Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki connected with Ahn over mutual interest and discussed a creative collaboration.[1]

As Creative Director, Ahn oversaw three different lines at the brand: The main line, the Maison Kitsuné Parisien line as well as ACIDE Maison Kitsuné.[10][14][9] She was hired in hopes of working towards the independence the fashion house had not yet achieved.[5] Bringing on the external hire allowed them to build up their in-house atelier, product range and fashion content.[10][11][12][13][9] Her impact provided significance for the brand as this was the first time it presented a collection at Paris fashion week co-ed show, January 18 of 2019 presented in collaboration with Boiler Room.[1][4][5][10][15][12][6][16][14][9]

After a year of working with the brand, Ahn announced her departure a week before Men's Paris fashion week in 2020.[5][17][13]

Shanghai Tang

Following her time at Maison Kitsuné, Ahn embarked on an on-going multi-collection partnership in 2019 with Chinese fashion brand, Shanghai Tang.[17] Her work with this brand was the creative's first experience working with contemporary Chinese-inspired women's fashion and relied on her first-hand experience with this aesthetic as she resided in Hong Kong in the early 1990's.[17]

The first collection Ahn worked on for the brand consisted of the Pre-Fall 2021 collaboration[17] including ready-to-wear garments like bags, shoes, scarves and more.[18][19] Focusing on the brand's history and heritage, Ahn relied on textile inspirations like quipoa, lattice, bamboo and moon.[18][20][19]
