Yuri Vladimirovich Mikhlin (21 September 1947 – 18 April 2026) was a Soviet and Ukrainian applied mathematician specializing in nonlinear dynamics and mechanics. He was a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and a professor at the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute".[1]

Biography

In 1970, Mikhlin graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Dnipropetrovsk State University with a degree in Dynamics and Strength of Machines.

From 1970, he worked as a researcher at the Research Institute for Automation of Ferrous Metallurgy, later serving as junior and senior research fellow.

Since 1976, he was Associate Professor at the Department of Higher Mathematics of the Dnipropetrovsk Civil Engineering Institute.

From 1989 to 1995, he was Professor at the Department of Mathematical Modeling of Dnipropetrovsk State University.

Since 1995, he was Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics of the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute".[2]

In 1974, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in Dynamics and Strength of Machines. In 1988, he defended his Doctor of Sciences dissertation at the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow on the topic Normal Oscillations of Nonlinear Finite-Dimensional Systems in theoretical mechanics. In 1991, he received the academic title of Professor.

He taught courses in mathematical analysis, vibration theory, asymptotic methods, mathematical modelling, and nonlinear dynamics.

Under his supervision, two doctoral dissertations and eight Candidate of Sciences dissertations were completed.

Scientific activity

Professor Mikhlin's main research areas included nonlinear normal modes, stability of nonlinear oscillations, and nonlinear vibration control.

His work focused on nonlinear elastic systems, including cylindrical shells and rotor systems, as well as chaotic, vibro-impact, and wave phenomena.

Research topics included:

  • nonlinear oscillations of elastic systems;
  • stability of nonlinear oscillations;
  • systems with limited energy supply;
  • vibration control and nonlinear dampers;
  • chaotic oscillations;
  • vibro-impact systems;
  • nonlinear wave processes.

Mikhlin authored more than 300 scientific publications in mechanics and applied mathematics.

His works were published in journals including Applied Mechanics Reviews, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Nonlinear Dynamics, International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, and Meccanica.

He served as guest editor for special issues of Journal of Sound and Vibration, Nonlinear Dynamics, International Journal of Nonlinear Mechanics, and Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science.

He was a member of editorial boards of international journals in mechanics and nonlinear dynamics.

International activity

Mikhlin participated in collaborative research with universities and research centres in Austria, Brazil, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

He organized mini-symposia at the ENOC (European Nonlinear Oscillations Conference) and served on scientific committees of international conferences.

He was one of the organizers and chairs of scientific committees of international conferences on nonlinear dynamics held at NTU "KhPI" in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016.

He was a member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), GAMM, EUROMECH, and NODYS.
