Yuri Nikolaevich Smirnov (19 May 1937 – 29 June 2011) was a Soviet and Russian nuclear physicist.

Biography

From 1960 to 1963, Smirnov was a staff member of the theoretical sector at Arzamas-16 (now Sarov), which was headed by Andrei Sakharov and tasked with the development of thermonuclear weapons. He was one of the developers of the Tsar Bomba and directly participated in the Soviet program for the peaceful use of underground nuclear explosions. Later, he served as a leading research fellow at the Russian Research Centre "Kurchatov Institute". He also authored several notable publications on the history of the Soviet atomic project.[1]
