Dr Yusof Mutahar is an Australian physician, published author, and Islamic theologian whose multidisciplinary career spans healthcare, education, and classical Islamic scholarship. He earned his medical degree from the University of Western Australia in 2013 and completed specialist training in 2017. Alongside his clinical practice, he has contributed extensively to medical education, publishing several medical texts and mentoring early-career clinicians. He has also served in advisory roles for international health policy and reform initiatives, advocating for equitable healthcare access in disadvantaged communities worldwide.
Parallel to his medical career, Dr Mutahar has pursued advanced studies in the Islamic sciences with a particular focus on Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), theology (ʿaqīdah of the Maturidi school), jurisprudence (Hanafi fiqh), Islamic history, classical Arabic literature, and spirituality (taṣawwuf). His primary scholarly expertise lies in Qur’anic commentary, with emphasis on the intellectual and theological contributions of Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d. 944).
His most significant academic undertaking is the multi-volume English translation of Tafsir al-Maturidi (Ta’wilat Ahl al-Sunnah), the seminal 30-volume Qur’anic exegesis by Imam al-Maturidi. This project represents one of the first systematic efforts to render this foundational text into English. His methodology maintains the Arabic Qur’anic text while providing a detailed, paragraph-by-paragraph English translation of Maturidi’s commentary, preserving theological nuance, linguistic analysis, and contextual insight. This work seeks to bridge the gap between classical Islamic theology and contemporary scholarship, making Maturidi’s contributions accessible to a global readership.
In addition to his translation work, Dr Mutahar has authored multiple publications in both medicine and Islamic studies. His research and writing reflect a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship that integrates scientific knowledge with the intellectual heritage of Islam.
Dr Mutahar is a direct descendant of Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu), the first Caliph of Islam, a lineage that informs his scholarly outlook and spiritual engagement.
Beyond academia and medicine, he is also a dedicated martial artist, holding a black belt in judo and having competed at both national and international levels.
