Yvan Lucas

Yvan Lucas is a Digital intermediate (DI) colorist and founder of the post production house SHED. He is a veteran and pioneer in color grading and digital grading. He is credited with performing the final color for over 190 feature films including such titles as The City of Lost Children, Amélie, Shutter Island, Argo and Django Unchained.

According to The American Society of Cinematographers, Lucas has performed color grading on: Delicatessen and Se7en which have highly influenced cinematography.

Career

Lucas was born in Cholet (Maine et Loire, France). It was during a yearlong internship as a projectionist at Le Rex in Cholet that he discovered his fascination for features when projecting 80's classics such as The Shining, Elephant Man and Raiders of The Lost Ark.[1] While discovering the movie industry, his first thought was to become an editor. It was during an internship at the photochemical laboratory Éclair in Paris that he discovered color grading. That quickly became his passion.

Lucas became a key figure in the French post industry[2], working with directors such as Jean Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro, Luc Besson, Roman Polanski, Bertrand Blier, André Techiné and Jean Jacques Annaud. Lucas and DP Darius Khondji have emphasized the golden color on features such as Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children.

Khondji used Varicon a contrast control system which allows to flash the negative with color tone as you film. This process was used on Delicatessen and Seven. About their long time collaboration, Khondji said: "I do a lot of testing with the labs before shooting, and then always work with the same color timer in post production. Yvan Lucas. He shares my passion for films and a very sensual approach to color"[3]

Following Darius Khondji, Lucas did his first movie Se7en in the US as a color supervisor. He used the print silver retention process developed by Deluxe to increase the blacks and manipulate the perception of the darkness for the viewers using the CCI process. His career became international with features such as Munich, The Game, Alien Resurrection, The Horse Whisperer, Stealing Beauty, Central Station. It is when Jean Pierre Jeunet asked him to supervise the digital intermediate (DI) on his feature, Amélie, that Lucas became the first lab color timer to move to digital grading.

In 2006, following his work in Europe with DP Robert Richardson (The Four Feathers), DP Janusz Kaminski (Munich) and DP Rodrigo Prieto (Alexander[4]) he decided to move to Los Angeles and work at EFILM (Hollywood). He fulfilled his longtime dream to do color grading with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino. In over eight years at Efilm, Lucas has been credited with achieving Dailies and DI on over 60 features including, Argo, Inglourious Basterds, The Wolf Of Wall Street, The Hunger Game: Catching Fire, Across The Universe and The Lost City Of Z.

SHED

In 2014, Lucas started SHED a post production facility based in Santa Monica, CA.[5]

SHED[6] is offering services ranging from Producing Dailies to Digital Intermediate for feature, commercial work and TV Series.

One of the first films finished at Shed was Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight.[7] This presented a very specific DI challenge because Tarantino insisted that the main color grading be done on film. Lucas' many years as a chemical color timer made him the perfect fit for the job. DP Robert Richardson explains, "The DI that produced the DCP is close to an exact duplicate of the released 70mm film. That was a request from Quentin which I honoured. As Yvan had also assisted in the grading of the final film, it allowed the DI to be achieved very rapidly.”

Lucas oversaw the final look creation of Live By Night, from dailies[8] and helping to choose the right camera for the look, all the way through final DI[9]. DP Bob Richardson said of Lucas' dailies color grading, "Yvan is an extraordinary color timer, the best in my opinion. He has great sensitivity for movies. His eye is very sharp in terms of colors. He is truly a master and an excellent pedagogue."

In 2017, Shed & Yvan Lucas accepted the Advanced Imaging Society's Lumiere award for High Dynamic Range for his work on Live by Night.
