Early Life
Yvano Antonio Wickham-Edwards was born in Toronto, Canada in 1996 and is the second youngest of nine children. His parents immigrated to Canada from Guyana, South America in the 20th century. He grew up in East York and was a french immersion student at Leaside Highschool (2010-2013) before finishing at Central Technical School (2013-2014). He began his career in 2014 as a freelance photojournalist and went on to study journalism at Centennial College (2015-2017). He made his directorial debut in 2019 with the short documentary #BLACK.
Career
Wickham-Edwards' work is largely inspired by Pulitzer Prize winning photographers Gordon Parks and Stanley Forman,[1] as well as by film auteurs Spike Lee and Craig Brewer. His works often explore themes surrounding identity and culture as it pertains to the so-called Black community. Early on in his career he made it his mission to try to affect positive change in Canada's Black communities using imagery.[5]
Photojournalism
Wickham-Edwards began his career in photojournalism while attending the Each1Teach1 program at Central Technical School in downtown Toronto. He went on to study journalism at Centennial College[6] before joining the OYA Emerging Filmmakers Program in 2017 where he made his first professional breakthrough,[7] earning the role as set photographer for the two time Canadian Screen Awards winning documentary Mr. Jane & Finch.[8][9][10]
Film
In 2019, Wickham-Edwards joined the Being Black in Canada film program, sponsored by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, where he wrote and directed his first short film #BLACK.[11] He successfully pitched his documentary concept and became one of six emerging filmmakers in the first Being Black in Toronto cohort.[12] Each film premiered at the 15th annual Montreal International Black Film Festival and screened at the 2020 Toronto Black Film Festival and 2020 Halifax Black Film Festival.[2]
#BLACK went on to be selected in over 10 film festivals across North America following its debut and was nominated for best director, best VFX & colour and best editing of a Canadian short doc at the 2020 Hollywood North Film Awards. [1]
In 2020, the Being Black in Toronto cohort premiered a self titled episode of CBC television's weekly documentary series Absolutely Canadian.[13] Season 20, episode 18 aired on CBC Toronto on November 7, 2020.[14] The docuseries now streams on CBC Gem.[15]
The Being Black In Toronto docuseries was selected in the 2020 Gary International Black Film Festival and won the Judges Award for Best Youth Film.[16]
In May 2021, Wickham-Edwards received the Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction, Documentary series for the Being Black In Toronto docuseries.[3]
