Zachary Alex West (born April 27, 1984) is an American former football defensive end. He played college football for the UTEP Miners. He was on the practice squad of both the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns during the 2007 NFL season.
Early life
Zachary Alex West was born on April 27, 1984.[1] He is a native of Citra, Florida.[2] He played high school football at St. John Lutheran High School in Ocala, Florida.[1] West played both offensive and defensive line during this three years on the varsity team.[1] He posted 80 tackles and five sacks in 2001, earning first-team All-Area honors.[1][3] He also threw the discus and shot put on the track team.[1]
College career
West enrolled at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to play college football for the Miners. He redshirted the 2002 season.[1] He played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman in 2003, recording 14 tackles and 0.5 sacks.[1] West started all 12 games at defensive tackle in 2004, posting 29 solo tackles, 11 assisted tackles, and 2.5 sacks while earning honorable mention All-Western Athletic Conference honors.[1][4] He appeared in 11 games, starting 10, during the 2005 season, totaling eight solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles while missing one game due to an ankle injury.[1][5]
West reported to the team late in training camp in August 2006.[2][6] That same month, he was criticized by UTEP head coach Mike Price for losing his temper during practice.[2][7] West started 11 of 12 games for the Miners as a senior in 2006, finishing with 30 tackles and two sacks while garnering honorable mention All-Conference USA recognition.[1][8] He was a sociology major at UTEP.[1] At the conclusion of his college career, West was invited to the Hula Bowl all-star game.[9]
Professional career
West measured in at 6'4", 302 pounds at his Pro Day.[10] He ran a 5.00 second 40-yard dash, a 1.71 10-yard split, a 4.53 20-yard shuttle, and a 7.46 three-cone drill.[10] He had a vertical jump of 26", a broad jump of 8'8", and bench pressed 225 pounds 28 times.[10] He was rated the 46th best defensive tackle in the 2007 NFL draft by NFLDraftScout.com.[10]
After going undrafted, West signed with the New England Patriots on May 8, 2007.[11][1] He was waived during final cuts on September 1 and signed to their practice squad on September 26.[12][13] He was released by the Patriots on October 9, 2007.[14]
West was signed to the Cleveland Browns' practice squad on December 26, 2007.[15] He became a free agent after the 2007 season and re-signed with the Browns on February 28, 2008.[16] He was waived on July 21, 2008.[17]
