From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Zaheed Sabur is a Bangladeshi software engineer and technology executive, currently serving as a Senior Director and Distinguished Engineer at Google in Zurich, Switzerland. He is notably the first Bangladeshi to be appointed as a Principal Engineer and Director at Google. Sabur is widely recognized for leading engineering teams behind several high-impact projects, including Google's generative AI chatbot, Gemini, formerly known as Bard.

Early life and education

Zaheed Sabur was born in Saudi Arabia, where his father was a professor at King Faisal University. He moved to Bangladesh at the age of eight and was raised in the coastal town of Patuakhali.

He completed his secondary education at Manipur High School and later attended Oxford International School in Dhaka. Sabur graduated from the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, achieving a perfect 4.0 CGPA and serving as the valedictorian of his graduating class.[1][2]

Career

Sabur began his professional career in 2007, joining Google's Bangalore office as a software engineer. Within six months, he transferred to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, where he worked on critical infrastructure and large-scale consumer products.[3]

In May 2019, Sabur was promoted to the role of Principal Engineer and Director at Google — the first Bangladeshi to attain this position. Based at Google’s Zurich office, he led teams responsible for major cross-functional projects.[4]

Among his most prominent achievements is his leadership role in developing Gemini, Google’s next-generation generative AI assistant. Launched in 2024 at Google I/O, Gemini was designed to help users write, brainstorm, learn, and create images. Under Sabur’s leadership, the project expanded globally as a key part of Google’s AI product ecosystem.[5]

Personal life and advocacy

Zaheed Sabur attributes his early interest in technology to his mother, Lutfunnessa Begum, who encouraged his curiosity and provided tools and components for his learning.

Beyond his professional work, Sabur is deeply involved in mentoring young talents from Bangladesh, promoting STEM education, and encouraging global career exploration. He frequently shares career advice and insights through talks, interviews, and educational initiatives.[2]
