The Africa Challenge 2009, also known as ZAC 2009 or the Zain Africa Challenge 2009 for sponsorship reasons, was the third season of the African inter-university quiz competition. Starting in the 2009 edition, Zain took over sponsorship the Africa Challenge competition following its acquisition of Celtel Africa[1]. The tournament was also expanded to include universities from West Africa bringing the number of competing universities to 32 from 8 countries across Africa. Teams competed for institutional grants for their universities and educational grants for themselves. The further the team progresses in the tournament, the larger the grants they received.

A total of 31 matches were played across the knock-out rounds of competition. The University of Ibadan, Nigeria won the tournament[2], their first title, beating Kenyatta University, Kenya in the finals. The tournament was hosted by John Sibi-Okumu and was televised[3] across all participating countries in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia and via satellite TV on DSTV.
