Career[edit]

Khalid's debut novel, Brother Alive, was published by Grove Press on July 12, 2022. It received favorable reviews from critics[8][9][10] and went on to win multiple awards[1][3]. The New York Times named Khalid a Writer to Watch[11] and called the novel "A searing collage of the profound and the mundane"[12]. Library Journal said the book is " One the most exciting debuts in recent years.”[13] The judges for the CLMP Firecracker Award for Fiction described the book as "...surreal, complex, puzzling, mind-expanding, imaginative, original, and presciently relevant to our times."[14] It has been translated to German.

Khalid's essays and short stories have been published in The New Yorker, n+1, The Believer, Astra Magazine, McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, and elsewhere. Khalid is as a mentor at Periplus[15], a program supporting writers of color living and working in the United States. He was also Fiction Editor at The Drift.
