Zak Smith (born July 16, 1976), also known as Zak Sabbath, is an American artist.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Smith was born in Syracuse, New York and grew up in Washington, D.C. After receiving a BFA from Cooper Union in 1998, he studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine and went on to receive an MFA from Yale University in 2001.[2]

Smith's father is Jewish.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

Art[edit]

Public collections containing Smith's work include the Museum of Modern Art[3] and the Progressive Corporation.[citation needed] Zak Smith is represented by Fredericks & Freiser Gallery in New York City.[4]

Other works[edit]

In 2009 Smith began writing a blog Playing D&D With Porn Stars with a focus on the game Dungeons & Dragons.[5] From March to November 2010, Smith directed and co-starred in I Hit It With My Axe, appearing along with other adult performers including Kimberly Kane, Satine Phoenix, Sasha Grey, Justine Joli, and Stoya. The weekly series followed the group as they played Dungeons & Dragons, and was produced by The Escapist.[6][7][8]

Smith in 2011 authored his first printed RPG work, Vornheim: The Complete City Kit, with RPG publisher Lamentations of the Flame Princess.[9] The gaming supplement won the 2012 IndieCade Best Technology of the Year award from the IndieCade Awards.[10]

Smith in 2014 authored the RPG setting A Red and Pleasant Land, also with Lamentations of the Flame Princess.[11][12] The setting won four prizes at the 2015 EN World RPG Awards (the ENnies): Silver Best Cartography, Gold Best Setting, Gold Best Writing, and Silver Product of the Year.[13] That same year, Wizards of the Coast engaged Smith as a consultant in the playtest of Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition.[14]

In 2016, Smith and co-author Patrick Stuart published the RPG megadungeon Maze of the Blue Medusa, through publisher Satyr Press.[15] The book won three awards at the 2016 EN World RPG Awards: Silver Best Adventure, Gold Best Electronic Book, and Silver Best Writing.[16]

In 2018, Smith wrote the RPG setting Frostbitten & Mutilated, released through Lamentations of the Flame Princess.[17] The setting won four awards at the 2018 EN World RPG Awards: Silver Best Art - Interior, Gold Best Monster/Adversary, Silver Best Setting, and Silver Best Writing.[18]

Personal life[edit]

Smith lived and worked in Brooklyn, New York until October 2007, when he moved to Los Angeles. He has previously dated Varrick Robinson and was formerly in a long-term relationship with adult industry performer Mandy Morbid.[19] Smith describes himself as an anarchist.[20][21][22]

Mandy Morbid and several other women in early February 2019 publicly accused Smith of abuse.[23] Smith released a statement denying the accusations.[24] The online RPG storefront DriveThruRPG announced it would no longer work with Smith and would be donating its portion of any revenue generated from the sale of products by Smith already on the storefront to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. Wizards of the Coast announced they would be removing all references to Smith from the print and digital editions of Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition and that Smith has been banned from the ENnie Awards ceremony held at Gen Con.[25] Gen Con management followed this up with a statement of its own that Smith was banned from the convention entirely.[26]
