Zena Holloway (born October 1,1973) is a British female photographer known for creating underwater imagery of people, babies and terrestrial creatures. Her underwater photography has been published and exhibited internationally. [1][2][3][4][5]
Early life
Zena Holloway, the daughter of an airline pilot, was born in Bahrain and raised in London, England where she learned to dive as a teenager.[6] She left school aged eighteen and moved to Hurghada, Egypt where she qualified as a PADI Diving Instructor and began taking photographs underwater.[7] She later moved to Grand Cayman and worked as an underwater videographer for Bob Soto's Diving.[8]
In 1995 Holloway returned to the UK to qualify as a part IV commercial diver. She found work in the underwater film industry as a clapper loader and camera assistant on commercials,[9] feature films, documentaries and music videos. As a camera assistant she travelled to Tunisia and Uruguay for the Discovery Channel.[10] Later, she filmed Great White Sharks in South Africa for the BBC,[11] and on assignment in Zanzibar she photographed octopus spear fishermen for National Geographic Magazine.[12] [13]
Career
In 1995 Holloway photographed race horses swimming in the sea surrounding Barbados. The resulting images gained recognition from the Association of Photographers in their Annual Awards. In 1998 her photography of babies swimming underwater won silver at The Royal Photographic Society and led to a number of photographic books on the subject.
Holloway has photographed many celebrities and sports personalities underwater including Andrea Berg for the Atlantis album, Justine Suissa from Above & Beyond, Katie Price, [14] Tulisa Contostavios,[15] Keri-anne Payne,[16] Deco,[17] [18] and Rita Ora.[19]
She has been commissioned for underwater fashion editorials such as How to Spend It Magazine,[20] as well as campaigns for clients like Pepsi, Nike and the Birmingham Royal Ballet.[21]
Holloway has exhibited extensively in Korea since 2016 with exhibitions in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Young-in and Cheonan.[22]
Her recent projects explore emotional reactions to oceans, lakes and waterways. She also shows a keen interest in environmental conservation and the protection of marine life.[6]
