Zhang Dainian (Chinese: 张岱年; pinyin: Zhāng Dàinián; 1909–2004) was a Chinese philosopher and historian of philosophy, renowned for his efforts to modernize Chinese philosophical methodology and integrate traditional Chinese thought with Marxist theory.
Early Life and Education
Zhang Dainian was born on 23 May 1909 in Xian County, Hebei Province, China. He developed an early interest in philosophy under the influence of his elder brother, Zhang Shenfu, who was also a philosopher. Zhang studied at Beijing Normal University, graduating in 1933.
Academic Career
After graduation, Zhang began teaching in the Philosophy Department at Tsinghua University. He later held academic positions at several universities, including Zhongguo University. In 1952, he joined Peking University as a professor and served as the director of the Institute of Humanities. Throughout his career, Zhang focused on integrating traditional Chinese philosophical concepts with contemporary philosophical frameworks.
Philosophical Contributions
Zhang Dainian is noted for advocating the synthesis of traditional Chinese thought with dialectical materialism as promoted in Marxism. His work emphasized the importance of historical and cultural context in the interpretation of philosophical ideas. He developed the concept of "ultimate reality" (本体), described as a unity of principle (理) and matter (物), distinguishing his approach from other contemporary schools of thought.
