The Zhonghe project is a projected uranium mine located in the Namib desert in the western part of Namibia in Erongo Region. It is located about 55 kilometres (34 mi) south of Usakos and about 90 kilometres (56 mi) east of Swakopmund in the vicinity of the Rössing and Husab uranium mines.[1] Uranium resource is believed to be 6000-12,000 tU contained in ore grading 0.02% uranium which is proposed to be extracted through heap leaching at a rate of 600 tU per year.[2][3] If built, the mine will be a conventional open pit mine.[3] The project is expected to cost US$600–700 million.[4]

The Zhonghe mine project is developed by Zhonghe Resources, a subsidiary of China Uranium Corporation which owns 58% of shares. The environmental impact assessment was completed in April 2011 and the mining licence was issued on 30 November 2012. The project has been criticized as there have not been any compulsory public discussions of the environmental impact assessment.[4]
