Zhongping Chen

Zhongping Chen is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the F-OCT Laboratory at the University of California, Irvine.[1] He is a co-founder and chairman of the board of directors of OCT Medical Imaging, Inc.

Education and Career

Dr. Chen received his B.S. degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. At UCI, he leads the Functional Optical Coherence Tomography Laboratory (F-OCT)[2], focusing on translational technologies for medical imaging and diagnosis.

Research Contributions

Zhongping Chen is a pioneering figure in biomedical optics, best known for his fundamental work in expanding the capabilities of optical coherence tomography (OCT) from purely structural imaging into functional imaging. He was among the first to publish on Doppler OCT[3] [4] [5], a technology that allows for the visualization and quantification of blood flow in microcirculation, and his group has played a leading role in developing other functional extensions including OCT angiography, optical coherence elastography[6] [7] , and second harmonic OCT, which provide critical contrast mechanisms for mapping clinically important parameters. The Doppler OCT and OCTA technologies developed by his team have been widely adopted in brain research and clinical ophthalmology[8]. His lab also designed some of the first miniaturized endoscopic and intravascular probes—including rotational and linear 2-D scanners—for OCT and fiber-based multiphoton microscopy (MPM), enabling high-resolution imaging inside the body. A key translational achievement was the development of an integrated intravascular OCT/ultrasound (US) system [9], demonstrating the first in vivo co-registered imaging with a single miniature probe. Furthermore, his group created a high-speed Fourier domain long-range OCT system for imaging the full airway in pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea, with studies encompassing over 400 human subjects. His work has translated these optical imaging technologies into clinical applications for diagnosing diseases in cardiology, ophthalmology, airway management, and oncology. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and holds over 25 patents in the fields of biomaterials, biosensors, and biomedical imaging.[10]
