Dr. Zia Ul Haq was born in Village Serie Gandigar, district Dir Upper, on 12th March 1980 to a Syed family from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan. He gained his early education in Abbottabad and Swat and matriculated from Alfarooq Public School Timergara Lower Dir in 1996. After passing matriculation, he enrolled at Qurtuba college in 1996 and Completed an MBBS degree from Khyber Medical College, the University of Peshawar in 2004. He currently serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the Khyber Medical University, Peshawar.

His current positions are as follows.

• President of Pakistan Network of Quality Assurance in Higher Education (PNQAHE)

Highlights of the career[edit]

Dr Zia Ul Haq is serving as the youngest Vice-Chancellor (in any institution) of Pakistan and pioneer Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, in the largest public-sector Medical University; i.e, Khyber Medical University, Peshawar, Pakistan. Khyber Medical University has 17 post-graduate institutes, 26 medical & dental colleges, 170 nursing, and allied health sciences attached to it and 48000 students.

He is currently an elected President of the Pakistan Network of Quality Assurance in Higher Education (PNQAHE) striving to enhance the quality of higher education in all 234 universities of Pakistan. Prof Zia has vast academic, research, and administrative experience in the field of Health Sciences and has published more than 80 research articles and 03 book chapters. He has acquired exceptionally high research funding from UN, NIHR & MRC UK, worth more than 4 billion Pak Rupees.

Dr. Zia has played an essential role in the current response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In recognition of his contributions to Public Health action and education in Pakistan, he has been awarded visiting Professorship from the University of Glasgow UK and a Fellowship in public health by distinction from the Royal College of UK. He has also been appointed as Director of the Asian Consortium for Health Research by Nanjing University, China. He played a vital role in the recent initiative of introducing the family practice approach in the healthcare system in Pakistan, an achievement resulting from his highly skillful management of collaboration between the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health, and major universities of Pakistan.

He played a focal role in establishing regional public health laboratories, the second of its kind in the country, and also drafted several policy documents and task force as a consultant: the first-ever health policy of KP, Environmental Health Policy, Human Resource for Health, Infectious Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSRS), mental health, Health & wellbeing, Health facilities assessments, and International Health Regulation. Prof Zia has supervised 07 Ph.D. and more than 35 MPH/MPhil students. He has received Higher Education Commission’s Country’s Best Researcher, Best University Teacher & Life-Time Achievement Awards.
