Ziad H Hamzeh is a Syrian American director, writer and producer. He is known for The Letter[1] and Always Brando (2011)[2]
Career[edit]
Ziad H Hamzeh studied Theatre and obtained a master's degree in 1986 at California State University Los Angeles and an MFA at California State University Fullerton in 1989. That same year, Hamzeh created Open Fist Theatre Company. The company was soon known to be a cutting edge theatre company that tackled tough material and created remarkable environmental sets with large cast shows.,[3]
His feature documentary, The Letter (2003) premiered at AFI in November of the same year.[4] The Letter went on to earning high praise and garnered many awards. The Letter has become a must see film in numerous colleges around the world as an example of the strife immigrants face daily in the USA. [5]
Many of the films that followed has defined Hamzeh as a focused filmmaker[6] Hamzeh deals with stories that center around the human struggles that impacts our lives daily.[7] In the year 2011, Hamzeh opened their film Always Brando internationally including being selected to be screened in Toronto International Film Festival[8][9]
As one of the producer's on the film The Flower of Aleppo[10] which was released in the year 2016. It was selected as the Tunisian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, but was changed later.[11] The film had its initial release at the 27th Carthage Film Festival on 28 October 2016, then it had its regular release in Tunisia on 6 November 2016. Hamzeh was selected to receive the Medal of Honor from his country Syria's film organization [12]
