Zipline International Inc. is a drone delivery logistics and robotics company based in the U.S. focused on emergency medical product delivery to remote regions.

Operations in Rwanda[edit]

Zipline began operations in Rwanda in partnership with the Rwandan Ministry of Health, in October 2016, [1] making Zipline the world's first commercial drone delivery service. [2] Zipline serves public hospitals with on-demand service of blood, having made over 4,000 deliveries to date. [2] Remote hospitals place orders by WhatsApp or phone call,[3] then an operator at Zipline's distribution center packs the blood products into a Zipline drone. The drone is then launched and flies autonomously to the hospital where it delivers the package from the air, without landing at the delivery site. [2] The drone then turns around and flies back to the distribution center and recovers using a mechatronic recovery system designed to quickly and reliably bring the drone out of the sky while taking up a small footprint and reducing complexity on the vehicle by removing the need for landing gear or VTOL.
