ZyBooks
Founded in 2012, Zyante Inc., doing business as zyBooks, is a creator of STEM-focused online learning materials with headquarters in Los Gatos, California[1].
zyBooks are designed to replace many written explanations found in traditional textbooks and include interactive activities and problems that are read, engaged with and viewed in a web browser[2].
History
zyBooks was founded in 2012 by Smita Bakshi[3], a former assistant professor at the University of California at Davis, and Frank Vahid[4], a professor of computer science at the University of California Riverside.
In 2016, zyBooks secured a $4 million investment from Bialla Venture Partners, allowing for content expansion and the development of new product features for instructors and students.[5]
In 2018, zyBooks claimed their materials are used by over 600 institutions and 450,000 students.
Recognition
A 2014 study conducted by the University of California Riverside found that interactive zyBooks content was more effective than static web content, and as a result, students’ quiz scores improved by 16% following a single lesson.[6]
In 2018, zyBooks received a $200,000 phase 1 development grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences through the Small Business Innovation Research program[7]. The program focused on the development of a web-based coding progression tool for high school and college students.
Products
zyBooks offers a variety of interactive course materials for STEM subjects, with customizable features for instructors and students.
