Zymo Research is a privately held American manufacturer of molecular biology research tools used for DNA and RNA research and analysis. The company also supports epigenetics research, the field of medicine studying stable heritable traits that cannot be explained by changes in DNA sequence.
History[edit]
Zymo Research Corporation was founded by Larry Jia in 1994. The company started its home base in Orange, CA in a garage, manufacturing products for DNA and RNA extraction and purification and other specialty products for E. coli and yeast based research. It expanded its product offerings to include tools for epigenetics research. In December 2010, the company relocated to Irvine, CA.[citation needed]
In 2009, Zymo Research Europe was established in Freiburg, Germany. It works as a distribution support hub for Europe and the Middle East and will also be initiating research and development programs at a new facility, intended for state-of-the-art researching.[when?]
Products[edit]
The company is a supplier of DNA extraction and RNA extraction kit products used to isolate and purify DNA and RNA from various sample sources ranging from tough to lyse environmental samples to tissue, blood, urine,[1] and serum samples.[2][not in citation given]
The company expanded and by 2016 was a recognized epigenetics company in competition with Epigentek,[3] offering products in DNA methylation and DNA hydroxymethylation; the company's work in this area, though, began before 2010.[4] The company showcased its "EZ DNA Methylation-Lightening" kit for bisulfate DNA conversion at the 2013 AACR meeting.[5] As of the second quarter of 2013, Zymo was "the only provider for genome-wide 5-hydroxymethylcytosine analysis services at the single-nucleotide resolution."[6]
During the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic, Zymo Research began development of an at-home testing kit for use by first-responders and companies for employee testing; as of March 2020[update], Zymo was waiting for FDA approval.[7]
Research[edit]
A review of PubMed indicates that scientists at Zymo have contributed to a couple of dozen peer reviewed manuscripts. Of these, two were authored exclusively by Zymo personnel, and a third was authored substantially by Zymo personnel.[bib 1][bib 2][bib 3] Predating these publications, the company's research on methods for DNA methylation analysis using bisulfate treatment was reported in 2010 in the trade press.[4]
Distribution[edit]
The company's products are distributed in North America and internationally through distributors located in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, Australia, and others.
