The term sadodere consists of the terms "sadistic" and "dere (デレ), to describe a sadistic character (usually from anime) who loves and may gain pleasure from teasing, embarrassing, or even physically harming his/her crush[1] character.

Different from yandere, who is defined as a character with loving, devoted personalities that may turn psychopathic if triggered, or tsundere, who is described as a character who is harsh to his/her crush[1] due to shyness, sadodere does not tend to harm or tease other people for reasons of mental breakdown or shyness. Instead, sadodere usually possesses a much higher level of common sense and morality, allowing them to interact normally with other people if they want to.

As to depict their sadistic characteristic, creators or authors usually grant sadodere a dominating position compared to their crush, allowing male characters to be dominated by female sadodere. However, as sadodere tends to possess an adequate level of common sense and morality, it is very unlikely that sadodere kills or abducts like the yandere. Instead, they tend to be less feared and will eventually form a relationship with their crush compared with the yandere.

Sadodere characters

  1. Nagatoro (長瀞) from Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro (Japanese: イジらないで、長瀞さん, Hepburn: Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san)
  2. Others (Anime characters)
  3. Other Western characters)

Personal interpretations about Nagatoro (Spoilers Warning)

Nagatoro herself, being a gyaru-ish style junior Japanese student of the male protagonist, Naoto Hachiouji , dares to actively approach and tease her school senior Naoto after seeing the artwork of Naoto regardless of the peer pressure of Japanese society where younger ones are expected to pay a heavy amount of respect to their seniors.

Despite the senpai–kōhai relation's deep roots in Japanese society, there have been changes since the end of the 20th century in academic and business organizations. Kōhai no longer show as much respect to the experience of their senpai, the relation has become more superficial, and the age factor has begun to lose importance.... Attitudes towards the senpai–kōhai system vary from appreciation for traditions and the benefits of a good senpai–kōhai relationship; to reluctant acquiescence; to antipathy. Those who criticize the system find it arbitrary and unfair, that senpai were often pushy, and that the system results in students who are shy or afraid of standing out from the group. For example, some kōhai fear that if they outperform their senpai in an activity, their senpai will lose face, for which kōhai must apologize. In some cases, the relation is open to violence and bullying. Most Japanese people—even those who criticize it—accept the senpai–kōhai system as a common-sense aspect of society, straying from which would have inevitably negative social consequences.

This illustrates the wild and bold personality of Nagatoro, not being restricted by the traditional Japanese views of the relationship between the junior and the senior. On the other hand, seeming to be attracted by the dedication of Naoto to his artwork and also sensing the shyness and introversion of Naoto, Nagatoro, with barely-seen blush, approaches and interacts with him with a mean and bold attitude, questions and teases him about his fantasy of being a knight-hero that is implied in his own artwork, as the reality is that Naoto himself doesn't even dare to directly look at Nagatoro and her friends. Such attitude has been seen continually where Nagatoro keeps teasing and points out the personality flaws of Naoto, which make him feel shy and prevent him from interacting with people around him like normal people do. However, as time goes by, Naoto has begun to become bolder in expressing his opinions, such improvement cannot be achieved without Nagatoro dragging him to interact with more people. In fact, the relationship between Naoto and Nagatoro has been gradually becoming much closer and normal.

The earlier version of Nagatoro is much more violent to Naoto.

Another earlier version of Nagatoro and Naoto being the protagonist can be found on the game The Nagatoro Saga.

In 2016, the creator of Nagatoro published another game about Nagatoro and Naoto. Escape from the Room with my Kōhai Game (後輩と部室から脱出するゲーム, Kōhai to bushitsu kara dasshutsu suru gēmu)
